Which card?

Currently using a modded 290x. I had a custom water loop that had a pump failure so I switched it over to a NZXT Kraken water cooling.

The card plays Skyrim and Witcher 3 almost fast enough at 4k (well Witcher is debatable). Problem is that it only has one display port. I own two Asus 28" 4k monitors and would prefer to hook them both up and be able to get 60 Hz.

My brain tells me the 970 would be a downgrade/not worth the effort. I would prefer to spend under $300 but can go a bit above. Goal is a video card with 3 display ports and hopefully more than a sidegrade from 290x overclocked to 1100 Mhz.

There's no where for you to go at that price point. The 970 is certainly slower than a 290X at 4K. Even hunting down a 980 would be a side grade since AMD cards gain so much ground at 4K that the 290X/390X match it. If you don't want to lose performance you'd need a 980 or 390X (there are models with 3 display ports), and if you want to gain performance you need a Fury, Fury X, or 980 Ti.

I think you'll either need to do another 290X/390X if you want to Crossfire. If you want a single GPU solution you'll need a Fury X or 980 Ti.

Any other single card is a lateral move or downgrade. The 290X has got some great legs on it.

Thank you for the feedback.

I had a second 290x but sold it to my friend when I was planning to upgrade last winter. It was a stock MSI 290x reference design. When I bought two 290x I planned to put them under water but ended up just using them as mining cards for a few months. Then the market that I was farming crashed and cost more in power bill (NYS rates suck) then I was really gaining.

So a 390x can be Xfired with a 290x? If that is the case will just get a 390x with 3 displayports and use it until 2016 summer and then get the new gen.
