Which card?

Now that my radeon 9800 pro is damaged (I don't know what caused it, possibly overheating) I am forced to replace it. I'm considering of getting a Geforce 6600GT as a sort of replacement (just something that gives roughly the same performance at a respectable price).

Which brings me to my query, which brand is the best or are they all the same? Here's what I was thinking of getting: Club3D Geforce 6600GT 128MB. Would 256MB of VRAM make a huge difference or at least a noticable difference in games like Battlefield 2, Doom 3 and farcry compared to 128MB?

it won't.

and save up/wait for a card that will be a respectable upgrade cos the 6600GT isn't a huge step up by any stretch of the imagination except in d3...

Ok, I don't think you understood me. I want a card thats more of a replacement rather than a huge upgrade. The 6600GT is fine from what I've heard. But what brand and will 256MB VRAM make a difference?

no point in getting 256mb AFAIK (limited by 128bit, and not fast enough anyway to take advantage of the xtra VRAM).

And while 6600GTs are great cards, they are no significant upgrade from a 9800pro. While you are getting a new card you may as well take the opportunity to move up in the world if you can afford it ;) So i'd suggest a 6800NU, or wait for the G70 to come out and see what that does to prices...

If you can't wait, you'll be happy with a 6600GT, and very happy with 6800NU :)

Yeah, you'll be happy with a 6600gt. OC it and it will beat your 9800 in most games (badly sometimes)...plus, it has Sm3.0. Its roughly the same price, so go for it!

Once again I can't really afford to wait a long time. I just want a cheap replacement, not a 6800GT or 7800GTX. A 6600GT will be fine for all of the games that I play at the moment and will last for a good few months.

About the RAM, I've just seen benchmarks and in certain games like Farcry, the 6600GT 256MB gave slightly higher performance (about 4 frames per second) and in most other games the 2 cards were identical performance wise. The 256MB version just isn't worth it then.

Edit: HDR in farcry and higher SM 3.0 are even more reasons to get it.

And would a club3d one be the same as any other brand?

I think the comments about the 6800s refer to the regular 6800 which can be found for the same price as a 6600gt(or maybe just a little bit more) on places like newegg and zipzoomfly and also will perform better.
