ok here is what I am looking at:

Radeon 9500npNOT SOFTMODABLE?

OR

Radeon 9600 Pro

or

GeForce FX 5600 rev2

I am all for overclocking theese as far as i can and intend to replace the hsf on the radeons with a IceBerg 4 pro or the Nvidia with anything I could find. Will the Iceberg 4 pro work on the geforce and is it necessary since it comes with ram heatsonks?

Please just pick between theese i have considered all other takers for this position nd have narowed it to theese three!
 
The 9500np won't mod cause it's a black pcb. Without the softmod the 9500np is too slow, imo. I'd get the 9600 pro. The fx5600 might be a tad bit faster, but $214 for that card is ridculous. You can get a 9700np for that price, of for $20 more a 9800np.

I like that one alot because it is on par for perfomance and has vivo wich i have now and love. i mean you have to get an aiw to match that and there is the extra money there.
 
Yeah that's true about the vivo. But you could always get a tuner card for about $50. And if you get one of those, then next time you need a new video card, you won't have to worry about getting one with vivo. Also, I remember seeing a 9600 a while back with vivo on it. I think it was made by gigacube. I'm not sure how much it costs, you might want to check it out though.

VIVO is a Nvidia thing it doesn't come on ati cards must have just read it wrong but that is a good point about the tuner card.

VIVO is not a Nvidia thing, it means VIdeo in Video out, and refers to any card with that capability. ATI AIW cards are VIVO cards, and 3rd party OEMS have made VIVO cards of nearly all ATI chipsets (maybe all). There are VIVO cards from most if not all video card makers of one variety or another.
 
I looked around more and here on sapphire's website it says that their 9600 pro comes with optional vivo. I guess vivo on these cards is more common than I even thought. Oh and a 9500 won't overclock as well as a 9600, mostly due to the fact that the 9600 is built on a .13 micron process vs .15 for the 9500.
 
wow that is really unexpected. i have been doing what i thought was alot of research and never ran across anything in ati other that the iaw's that had video in. that is awesome.
 
If you get away from the regular heavily ? ?NV optimized?? game benchmarks that most sites use the 9600 pro and 5600U v2 are generally pretty close. Using some custom demos in these 2 reviews even puts the 9600pro a little ahead in my estimation. hardocp ? digilife.

In this hardfrarticle the 9600 pro was faster overall in 12 games vs 5600U2.

Considering price, 9600 pro is a much better deal than the 5600U2. Also, the DX9 shader performance of the 9600pro could mean much better performance down the road. I think once you get up around $215 you might have to consider jumping to a 9800np.
 
ok so now looking at the 9600pro more exclusivly what performance increases could i expect in the 256 over the 128 if any? and I tend to keep up on these things but the 9600 isn't at al softmodable is it?
 
256MB 9600 pro?s are clocked 400/200 compared to 128MB pro?s 400/300.

256MB is not needed on a midrange card. It can never run fast enough at very high resolutions (1600x1200) with AA/AF cranked all the way up to use it anyway. 128MB is plenty. 128MB 9600 pro will run games significantly faster than a 9600 256MB because of the 100mhz faster memroy.

If you go 9600 pro just make sure it is clocked 400/300DDR and not one of the 9600 pro ?EZ? or ?Lite? versions clocked 400/200.

 
not a bad choice at all but I was wondering, if you were willing to spend 213 for the 5600 why wouldnt you spend it for a 9700?

DerwenArtos12, You might want to check with your local CompUSA store. They have 9500Pro's @ 129.99, which are, if not better, than the 9600Pro's. I just puchased one today. The sales ends 9/6.
