Hello Gamers,
What video card would be the best card for me who uses only a 22" monitor to game on? as of right now I am using WinXP but I recently purchased Windows 7 (64b)

so I will be converting over to that OS very soon. I play most FPSs but also enjoy the hard combat-sims and right now I'm trying Mass Effect-2. I have been searching here and Newegg at the hi-end cards and well, I am now very over whelmed :)

At one moment I'll decide on an ATi and then the next moment I'm ready to get an Nvidia card. I know a lot of you guys are using a wide-screen monitor to game on but I'm totally at peace with my flat screen monitor =-)

I just want a card that will play any/most games for me without a hiccup... anyway thanks for helping, Jake

I'm guessing the resolution is 1600x900 give or take some pixels. I would personally go with a GTX 460 which can be bought for around $100. Or if you want to overkill and guarantee max settings then I would go for a HD 6870 which is around $150.

Most 22" monitors now are 1920x1080 and even 4-5 years back used to be 1680x1050.

To play at the rez you want without AA you will probably need a 6900 or 570 level card. Assuming 16x10 or so or 19x10, mostly max but not always, and mostly any form of AA off.

If yours isn't a wide screen and is still 22", is it a CRT by any chance?

Thanks Guys,
I use a LG 22" flat screen LCD monitor, an awesome monitor though! and in my first post I meant to say that a lot here in this forum play on a large screen TV monitor whereas I'm fine on my puter screen.

Again thanks for your knowledge its greatly appreciated.

1. Budget
2. CPU Model
3. Power supply with capacity in watts

These would help in giving a good recommendation

Think for 1680x1050 a gtx570 or 6970 would be a good start, for that resolution both options would be highend with most buying a 6870 or gtx560.

If you plan a new monitor down the road the 7950 seems to be getting alot of attention with plenty of people ocing it to extreme levels and it has a excellent power to performance ratio prob the best right now.

What CPU do you have? If you are running Windows XP I have to assume this is an older system. In which case buying a big fancy card is not going to be much help.

Also, what power supply do you have? Or is this a pre-build system (ie Dell, HP, etc).

GTX460 1GB here with a 22", 1680x1050 monitor. Bought it when they came out, but it's still working quite well.
However there's always something you can turn on to bring the card to its knees, like "Ubersampling" in Witcher 2, high-quality Ambient Occlusion and transparency AA in Skyrim etc., and newer games will only get even more demanding. So even at relatively low resolutions, you'll still want a pretty good video card if you want to run your games at the highest settings.

My sys:
WinXP sp3
Intel i5 661, socket 1156 LGA (clarkDale @3.33ghz)
Mobo: MSI P55-GD65 (MS-7585)
8 Gig memory
Corsair 800W PU

I have Win7 (64b) and I'll be switching over in the very near future and I am content
with my 22" monitor but if I do get a larger monitor it would only be to a 24" as I am
happy little clam being old skool :)

Oops again, shhsssh! I think my budget will be around $325.00 as that should get me safe to play ANY game at max settings or at least near max.

and if necessary I suppose a little more is doable. I'm gonna retire this June so 'm getting my good stuff before this summer =-)

If you haven't bought yet, I'd wait a couple of weeks. Nvidia's new lineup is coming out, likely exerting downward pressure on pricing in the upper/mid range. You should be able to get a better price on that exact card soon.

$300 7870 will be out in a week with safe-to-guess 6970 performance, lower or equal price (assuming no mark-ups on launch day) and lower power usage (if that matters to you, always a perk). The 6970 is still a "great" card, it just depends on price. At $260 or less, I'd say it's a good deal, but not at $300 or above.
