Which card to upgrade for BF2?

I bought one of those dells in dec 02, and it seems this system is no longer good enough.

p4 2.4 ghz
768 rdram 🙁 if i have to upgrade the ram, i'd rather just get another dell
ati 9500 tx

bf2 stutters a lot. i played the demo fine, but the full version has larger maps.

i play at the lowest settings w/ 100 view distance, which i don't mind. Just want it to be smooth.

i looked at the anandtech review, but i'm not sure about ati cards, since i need an agp card. i'm leaning towards the 6600 agp 128mb or the 9800 pro 128. looking to spend ~$100, with $125 being the limit.

For no more then 125 I think the 9800pro would be best. It would be better then the 6600.

9800Pro of 6600GT. Whichever one you like better. BF2 is a ramwhore. Like you said, looks liek it's time to get a new Dell, preferably one with 2GB of RAM.

6600GT with 1gb RAM (It's plenty, hell I played it with 512mb on everything medium at 1024x768 and a 8500LE...). An overclock on the CPU would help, too. You can get minimum 2.8 on it. Make sure you have at least a 350W PSU to run all that nice and easy =)

I have the exact same computer as you:

2.4 Northwood P4
768mb RDRAM
9600xt 128mb

BF2 plays pretty crappy, and I have to get rid of shadows, lighting and terrain just to get average framerates of 20 (1024x768). And thats just the demo.

I hate my ram, especially because it is so expensive to upgrade. About 2 years ago I purchased 256mb (2x128) and it cost me $300AUD. Right now I'm looking to upgrade to A64 and 2gb ram.

If it's cheap, grab some more ram with your video card. So it may be time for a new comp, it's up to you. With the VGA, I'll side with the others and reccomend both-I've had good experiences with either of them.

I honestly think the 9800Pro will not stand up like the 6600GT would.. the nV cards are better in BF2, and the 6600GT is slightly more powerful anyways, so I think the 6600GT has the good edge. That's the way I'd go.... my 6800GT runs the game beautifully.
