Which card is better for gaming (UT2004 and Doom 3)

ASUS-V9480-Ti4800 128MB-8X OEM or CHAINTECH FX5500-256MB TV-OUT

I was told that the ASUS is much better. I would like to hear your advice. I have both, not sure which one I am giving to my sister, the other I am keepng... BTW... I am new and love what I have read so far!

I was told that too, but I have a hard time understanding that a 128 is better than 256... But I will take your word.

The extra 128MB on that 5500 is useless. The GPU and memory bus are too slow to take advantage of it. Which is also why the 4800 is better, the 4800 is faster in GPU and memory.

More RAM != better performance.

I Thought more RAM is better, but the prior post says that it is useless.

TI =128
FX = 256

It is, but only if the chipset is powerful enough to take advantage of it.

4800>>>5500.

The extra RAM will raise your capacity for more detailed textures (provided a game offers a texture set for the still relatively rare 256MB card), but it can't do anything about the card's raw speed. A 4x2, 300MHz 4800 should pretty much whip a 4x1, 270MHz 5500. The 5500 will be faster with AA+AF b/c of optimizations, but that's strictly relative--I wouldn't classify the 5500 as "fast" without AA+AF, let alone with them.

Some numbers. A 4800 is just a renamed 4600 with AGP 8x support, though that Asus you listed is an interesting spin on a 4800SE (4400 w/AGP 8x). It's apparently got a 350MHz core (50Mhz higher than a typical 4600 and 75MHz higher than a typical 4400) along with typical 4400 memory speed (275MHz DDR). A 5500. on the other hand, is much slower than even the lowly 5600 (270/200 vs. 325/275MHz). So just compare the '4600-8x' and the '5600' on those charts for a rough estimate of your cards' abilities (or lack thereof, in the 5500's case 😛).

To sum up, take the 4800SE and burn/sell that 5500. 😀

Thanks a lot. Thursday they will be coming in.... Woo Hooo My sister thanks you for her 256 that she is getting!
