Hi everyone,
I'm planning to buy a new 3D card for my P3 450mhz (yes I know I have slow pc, but I'm planning to buy a new one within a few months)
What's the best card I can buy at the moment?
I was planning to buy a GeForce 4 Ti 4200 ,
Is this a good choice?

Yes, the Ti 4200 are great cards. You will definitely need that cpu, memory, motherboard upgrade to get the full potential of the card.

I'd say that depens on how soon you are going to buy and your budget. Having a p3 450 think a ti 4200 is a good choice, but it will not hold out 4 longer than a few months. If you are upgrading, i suggest you get a good one - like the 4600, or radeon 9700 OR, if it is in your budget, wait 4 the NV30

I had a TNT2 Ultra for my P3-450 back in the day...when it was the top of the line card. If you plan on upgrading within a month or 2...get a geforce4 Ti4x00....Radeon 9700 if you can afford it I guess...

 Do check you have an AGP2.0 (the standard NOT the multiplier) compliant slot, there is a chance you may only have an AGP1,.0 AGP slot on your mobo. With AGP1.0 you'd be limited to a std Radeon level card so a PCI would be a better and more sure route.

;) At 450mhz a GF2MX would be more than you need, but if you plan to take this new card with you a GF4TI4200 would definitely be my rec, the cards above aren't really worth the price hike for us mortals.

yeah, a gf2 would be plenty for 450mhz
the value gaming reccomendation at anands frontpage was the radeon 8500 (the cpu was an athlon 1700 or so i think)

im going with the radeon myself and a 1600+, if i had the extra cash id get the gf4 4200 at about 120 bucks, top of the line 4600 or radeon 9700 is the best of course, but will you really need it even when you upgrade? what res do you like to play games at, on what size monitor? and are you going to do any extra media stuff that would require a higher end card?

if u plan on upgrading in the near future, then it's cool i guess. but if not.... the gf4 is way overkill.

Wow, where did you find that? How about an ATI 3D Rage II with 2MB VRAM?

The GeForce 3 can run about any game, and you could get one for roughly $80

 Yeah but the GF3 cards have plenty of downsides. Of course prices are low and they do have very good 3D perf, AA and DX8 hw. However Rad8500/9000PRO offer DX8 hw and 3D which is as good as GF3, they also significantly enhance image quality, dual display, TVout and DVD playback. GF4TI not only offer improved 3D perf but also offer hugely better image quality and dual display while TVout/VIVO and AA are also improved. The best things about the GF4TI cards is they take full advantage of the power offered by the faster CPUs. If Rad8500/9000PRO are priced at about GF3 levels then the Rads are definitely better, if you plan to get an AthlonXP or medium-to-fast P4 then it's well worth paying the little extra for the GF4TI. Whatever you buy, while you are severely CPU limited as you will be with at 450mhz you want to enable AA and AF in order to use up as much of untapped gfx card power as possible.

if you are like me and are always trying to upgrade for long term use, buy the best one you can now and just use it for years until that becomes the slowest component in the system again =)

i plan on using my vid card for at least several years (hah i just upgraded from a matrox millenium 2 4 meg pci a few months ago)
