The STi is every bit as good a track car as the Evo. When will people realize that the original C&D article claiming the Evo was better than the STI was written by a Mitsu contractor?
Not sure if the cars are the same, but top gear also rates the evo as faster...
I saw that episode. The cars were not the same. Those were both UK market cars, where the STi had the 2.0L turbo and the Evo was a special edition model with extra hp.
Also, it is well-known that stock-for-stock the STi has more understeer than the Evo, but the fix for this is easy and less than $300 (basically a bigger rear sway bar and an alignment). I really don't know why it's even brought up anymore. And in the meantime, the build quality of the STi is far superior than the Evos.

No doubt. I'd never buy a mitsubishi. The EVO is their best offering, but compared to the product from the far superior company I truly think that this is a no-brainer decision between the two cars.

You should also look into a Subaru Legacy GT or Acura TSX/TL

TSX with 200HP is a joke of a enthusiasts car! The 0-60 in the 7.7sec range and the Qtr mile in the low 16's lead me to believe a bunch of former CIvic drivers buy these!

The FWD nature of the TL would lead me to overlook this car immediately and focus on the CTS & G35 as better alternatives. The TL is no larger than the Mazda 6S and significantly smaller than the G35/CTS.

Well if reliability isn't your thing then get a CTS... the G35 is nice but I think its more than 30k.

I wouldn't call a TSX a joke of an enthusiasts car.

Lets stick to Apples here, stock cars! If we start comparing Oranges, we can open this convo up to all sorts of Race-Prepped cars.
The TSX with a great Chasis needs more HP, a lot more! And TQ. That 2.4L just aint cutting it as a performance motor!
And yes its 0-60 and 1/4 mile times along with its sh!tty M&S tires from the factory contribute to its image that its a freindly car without much of a sporting nature.

Stevens Creek Mitsubishi delaer here in San Jose.

I'm voting EVO! but I don't think these cars are good daily drivers, great track cars but why buy this if your never gonna track it.

Don't forget about the Volvo S60R, about $30K used. S40 T5 AWD is 227HP and AWD with a lot of luxury features.

EVO for $25k that's pretty good price. I hope some subaru dealer would list the STI under 30k. maybe better to buy it at year end.
S40 T5 was alright, but it's quite expensive and definately not as fun to drive as Evo or STI. I kind of like a "racier" car. S60R is a big car and i think it's way over budget.

Those cars are too close to my current Mazda 6S HB. I want something smaller and sportier. Practicality is not a big concern (except no insane gas mileage). I test drove the Lagacy GT (with the STI engine) be4, it's nice but i'd rather get the real STI.

Id get a used M3, like the one someone was selling here on the forums. But if I had to make a choice between Evo and STI, id get an EVO hands down, just a better car. Also since when do you care what your gf thinks of what you buy?

The LGT engine is actually different from the one in the STi. Contrary to popular belief, the LGT engine is not a detuned version of the STi engine. 2 different engines.

I've never test-driven one.

not my taste. I don't really like cars without a "butt". Besides it's a real sports car, in the class like RX-8 and Z350. I'm looking for a sport compact. Another reason i like cars like STI and Evo is that i love watching rally racing and play rally games.

well depends on what kind of gf you have? and unfortunately (or not) I'm engaged so it'll be a car that we both drive.

Current gen M3 is super nice, but i wouldn't consider it as a long term car because maintanence is super expensive and gas mileage is horrible.

I wouldn't buy the Cooper S because it is way over-priced, and I would stay away from Mistui because there are rumors they might pull their North America automotive division

why's the Cooper even in the poll? it's in a different class than the other two...what are you looking for exactly in your next car?

STi b/c i have heard they are more fun to drive on the road....while still decent at track stuff (would get its a$$ handed to it on the track by an EVO though)

though if you try and take an evo to the track mitsu is actively voiding people's warranties b/c they are a fun bunch of bastards

and the cooper is like...FWD and it probably has a 300 lb piece of glass on the roof

a fun subcompact sports sedan/coupe at or under $30k. I thought of VW GTI and Beatle Turbo also but i'm not confident with VW reliability. I don't consider true sports cars lik Z and RX8... though RX8 is close...

what? even the A-spec Evo without AYC can still spank the US-Spec 2.5L sti.... the Evo is a much better car despite being short of 20 hp.

I'm not sure you're ready for an STi or an Evo if you think that a GTI or a Mini is even in the same class...

For you, I think I should have voted for the Mini. The STi and Evo are not "fun" cars. They are serious performance cars with a relatively cheap price tag. Modern day muscle with an import twist. They have a bad habit of turning on young drivers who don't take them seriously.

I'm saving for a down on a new or slightly used car. Budget is within 30k. I want a fun car with stick shift. I'm leaning toward the WRX STI coz my gf doesn't like the EVO, and my parents wouldn't be pleased with the size of the Mini (even though they won't ride on this car). Scion tC seems to be a good value but i think it's nowhere close as fun to drive than any of these 3 cars.

30K and you waste your money on this shit. Get a damn Volvo V70.
