Which car should mother-in-law get?

Mother-in-law is back from Africa and needs a car... she's come down to the wire and basically narrowed it down to:

warranty, mileage are comparable.

2004 Hyundai Elenta GLS 4-door Sedan
19,281 miles
power windows/locks
$9500
$10,450 tax/license/etc

2003 Dodge Neon
38,000 miles
automatic
cd
a/c
power locks

$8500
$9376.18 tax/license/etc

So, while more research and hunting might come up with a better deal, she wants to buy like yesterday. Rather than prolong her search, I'd like to help give her a "lightning round" poll of the general consensus. My wife has a neon and, while it's treated her ok, it's far from homebaked goodness.

Dodge is the last car on the earth I'd buy, so Hyundai.

Hyundai VS Dodge Neon is a very, very, very close Hyundai over the Doge

I concur, how much is a used Civic?

In Seattle. Well, if they're really not reasonable, I could call out and try and get them to head elsewhere. Haven't been doing any of the searching myself.

She originally was looking for something, putting reliability as high as possible, for around $8,000.

my guesstimation for the hyundai is about $8k (a new one goes for about $12k, no?) and the neon about $6k with 40k miles (used neon's and cavalier's are worthless). im thinking about dealer prices too so you should be able to do better privately.

i say a used elantra is a good choice. reliable yet a lower resale value than civic/corolla. if she wants a new car i'd go with a new corolla. it's boring but it works.

Well, if I can find something in the Seattle area in the next couple hours or so, I could maybe get her to hold off for a Civic. Gonna be a hard sell, however, she's rarin' to buy.

Hyundai has been getting steadily and steadily better in quality, reliability, and name. Dodge....I can't say much.

Thanks for the thought on the matter. She's definitely not looking for anything "exciting" right now, just needs a good, reliable car to get her around town.

how about that GM discount? you can get a saab 9-2x for $17k and maybe you can work out some deals for the pontiac vibe, or maybe even an impala or something.

One thing to note is that both of the above cars are still under the original warrantees. Why is that worthy of noting, you ask? Uh... well... I don't know. But thanks, I'll check around and see if they haven't already bought the elantra :)
