I am just getting into the cable internet scene and want buy the modem rather than pay $15 a month. The choice I have is between a Motorola Surfboard modem and a Best Data CMX110 modem. Road Runner says they have had the least problems with the Best Data but should I believe them? Maybe they just have a lot of these on the self this week. Both come with a 2 year Road Runner warranty. Give me your opinions.

I'd reccomend going with the Motorola, it's a brand name, so at the very least, support should be a liitle easier to come by.

My surfboard has been fine as far as I can tell. One of my online friends who has @home said his friend with a surfboard on the same isp gets better pings than with his modem (I forgot what kind he has). I think I would go with the Surfboard.

The lancity modems are the best ones. I was given one when I first started my cable service a long time ago. They dont give those out anymore because they're too expensive. If you really want the best go for lancity. (if it will work on ther network)

check each webiste and see what getting drivers is like..

eventually you will need to update them or may lose them etc and it is good to be able to get them again :)

I would try to make sure that you'll be able to use your cable modem long enough for the purchase to be worthwhile. There is always the potential that your service may change and require a new modem.

there is no driver for the modem. I would recommend the surfboard sb3100 since it's DOCSIS compliant. How much are they selling it to you. I saw at some website where they sell it for $220. Let me know and I'll find the website for you.

Paldo-
I had considered buying the modem from someplace other than the ISP. They are trying to sell it to me for $259 regardless of the brand I buy from them. This is high but worth it, in my mind, to get a 2 year warranty from the ISP. The apparent flakiness of the Motorola makes me nervous and I figure that surely I can end up with a good modem within the 2 year warranty if I do have problems. Thoughts??

Just make sure that the modem is DOCSIS compliant. Most of the major cable providers are going to use the standard and this should make it easy to switch from one service to the other. I am using a Toshiba PCX1100 and have never had a problem with it. I use to have a motorola and I liked it a little better because you could tell how fast you were downloading just by looking at the led on the modem. My Toshiba just flashes when I am sending or receiving data. The Motorola had a light for receiving and a light for sending.

I bought my Toshiba from Circuit City when they had a special with Roadrunner. Total price was $150 and I got my first month of service for free. Not a bad deal considering that I only pay $30 a month for service.

Also, from what I understand, the docsis standard allows the modem to be flashed so that it can be upgraded later.

Motorola SurfBoard is made by GI and their cable modems have been very reliable in the past.
Latest 3100 is DOCSIS 1.1 compliant (means its the latest generation).
It has integrated PSU ( no brick , just regular plug).

My impression is Best Data is only DOCSIS 1.0 but I could be wrong.

I am a Network Ops Engineer for a national cable ISP (I wont say which LOL), and weve been having a problem with those Toshiba modems. Its not with the modems though, its with the particular Cisco IOS that was on the UBR.

Like he said, make sure its DOCSIS compliant. Some of our sites are COM21 and not DOCSIS, and let me just say that the only sites we have trouble with are the COM21. But, I doubt highly your area would be COM21.

Most of our users have the surfboards and they seem to work pretty good, so Id go with that. I have a 3COM US Robotics myself however, and @Home. It rips pretty good. I just pulled 8160 Kbps on msn.com's speedtest.

msn.com speedtest is unreliable IMO.
Use dslreports.com speedtest.

I have surfboard 3100 (OptimumOnline ISP) and 5000down/1000up
according to dslreports. Actual file download speed is 500-600kB.
So its pretty accurate.
