Which cable modem should I buy for my home network?

Hi folks,

So my wonderful ISP has decided to increase my monthly modem lease fee, to an amount such that I'm going to purchase my own modem. The only question is, which would y'all recommend? I have a 30mbit/8mbit up connection, and am using the router in my signature. I've heard good things about the Motorola SB6121, and the web seems to suggest it as the best one to purchase. However I'm not sure if its obsolete at this point, so am curious to hear the expert opinion of Anandtech forumnites!

The SB6121 isn't obsolete and it works great, but I would go with their latest model which is the SB6141.

The technical difference is that the 6121 can bond only 4 downstream channels, while the 6141 can bond 8 downstream channels - basically it will support higher bandwidth if your ISP offers them (and you pay for it). You don't NEED to get the latest model, but it's only $15-$20 difference in the grand scheme of things.

First off, what is your ISP? The bigger ones often have an approved list of devices that you can connect to their network.
