Which build: i7-920 vs. i5-750?

Trying to decide on the setup which will last me the longest/best bang for my buck using WIndows 7. Current prices on newegg are being used below. No need for video card, other accessories, etc.:

i7-920 --> $289
Gigabyte EX58 --> $174 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128375)
6 GB Trichannel Corsair --> $140 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145258)

TOTAL = $603


i5-750 --> $200
Gigabyte P55M --> $135 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128404)
8 GB G.Skill Dual channel --> $188 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231277)

TOTAL = $523

Am I wrong in that the i860 w/ X58 seems like a no brainer for only $71 more?

Try to put that 860 in an x58 board and you will be horribly disappointed since they aren't the same socket.

You'd have to switch out the 860 for the 920. The 860 is socket 1156, same as the 750, while X58 and the 920 are socket 1366.

i7-920 setup I assume then over the i-750 though still for only $80 the best bang for the buck?

If you've got the $, it's indeed a better solution.

Socket 1156 is good, and stock v stock is outstanding, but that's mostly due to the much more aggressive 'turbo' mode that's in those chips. Once overclocked to 3.5ghz+, turbo mode is irrelevant, and the full 9xx series is better.

1156 is a cheaper way to go for those very budget minded but as I understand it the 1366 has more of a future upgrade. If you are the type that completely swaps out the mobo every two years then that becomes a moot point. i7 series has better/higher overclocking potential though.

1156 chips currently use less wattage but at the same time don't like Xfire of SLI as much as the 1366 socket
1366 32nm will rock!
