Which brands of 9800 np use Samsung memory?

I'm buying a 9800 np soon and i'm worried about getting one with Infineon memory. Are there any particular brands/models thatalways or nearly always use Samsung modules in their 9800np's? Or in the very worst case scenario if I do end up with Infineon, will it reliable flash to PRO speeds? Cheers! 🙂

If you can find one, the Sapphire one with the red PCB usually had the Samsung stuff (the 3.3ns doing as well as the 2.8, some people speculating they were remarked 2.8's). However, the 9800np has been discontinued because of all of the successful attempts at flashing to pro cards (and also they wanted another way to dump chips with defective pipelines) and has been replaced by the 9800SE as in "special olympics edition." They all have 4 of their pixel pipelines disabled and there are two versions, the ones with the 128-bit RAM and the ones with 256-bit. The latter is the one you need in order to still be able to flash into a Pro. Although there is a fairly significant chance that the other 4 pipelines disabled by ATI will be defective and result in checkerboard artifacting.

As a rule of thumb, the 9800SE boards with 256-bit RAM have the memory chips organized in the L shape around the core chipset much like the 9800np and the 9800 Pro. The one manufacturer that routinely uses the 256-bit design is Powercolor and the Sapphire ones are usually the 128-bit mem in a row above the core like the 9500/9600.

If you are smited by the overclocking gods and blessed (cursed?) with Infineon RAM, but it's in the 256-bit config, you can still flash to the Pro BIOS, but you may have to downclock the mem a bit I think.

This is all based off of info from the members of the Rage3D forums, so it may not be accurate. But in any scenario, I would recommend getting a really cheap PCI vid card and back up your 9800SE/np BIOS so that you can flash your card back.

Good luck 🙂

The 9800np has been discontinued? Scandolous! :Q

Looks like i'm going to have to get one while I can then, Infineon or not, nothing can touch the 9800np for price/performance even at stock speeds. Damn i'd still like to be sure of decent memory though...

Here's a link to the card i'm interested in, reckon it'll be good? It's a Sapphire...

Sapphire 9800np

Richdog, FWIW, I'm waiting on an email from my buddy to tell me what chips I got on my Sapphire 9800NP from Newegg. I had it shipped to his house...long story. 😉

I too am hoping for any speed Samsung memory.

I did not know that (allegedly) the Sapphire w/the red PCB has the Samsung chips. Neweggs' pic of my card shows a red PCB....I am hoping!!! I'd be happy just running the card a 9800Pro stock speeds, stably.

Hey! I just checked something. I KNOW I bought a Sapphire card...but my order at Newegg says:

VGA ATIOEM|RADEON 9800 128M 8X AGP%

So that means I got a "built by ATI card?" 😕 What kind of memory do they use? Man, I hope my buddy emails me soon! :|

LOL i hope they have'nt messed the order up for you, that would be a nightmare. More likely though, that's just their description of the card and it will turn out to be a Sapphire. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you getting Samsung memory too, and if you do get it just give me a quick PM to let me know and give me hope for me getting some. 😀

I know I've posted this link before but it keeps coming up and I think this Infineon ram is getting an unfair rap
These guys were able to easily get 9800pro speeds out of their test 9800np and at NZ$200 LESS than a 9800pro it is a steal!

I definitely would not say it's getting an "unfair rap." There have been several people who have gotten the infineon ram and said that it would not budge.

I have Infineon rated at 3.0ns. It will not go higher than 330 (it won't even do 330 -- it tops out at 3-twenty-something). It artifacts like crazy beyond that level -- nothing but garble on the screen.

BUT I have read this article and I beleive what it's saying about the Gigacube card. It makes me think that if I flashed my BBA 9800np with the Gigacube BIOS I might get that kind of performance out of it. But I'm not sure. It's just a theory. And I've never flashed a BIOS before, but damn I would love to know if my card is limited by the BIOS, rather than the RAM itself.

Hello,
I just picked up a ati branded 9800 np, came home. Opened the package up, it has the infineon 3.0 mem chips
