Before you think that i'm smoking this stuff, i just want to make it clear that the Chapstick brand of chap sticks seem to dry out my lips when it's not applied. Maybe it's just me, but a few people have told me that Chapstick (the brand) is sort of known for lip addiction. Soooo, does anyone know of any pure chap sticks?

It's not really that you become addicted to it. When you use something that duplicates what your body is supposed to do naturally, your body will stop doing it. Kind of like if you take creatine for too long, your body will stop making it. Same thing with the chapstick.

I think the type without the SMACK in it is non addictive!!

A cowboy pull's into town, and get's off his horse.

He walks around to the back of the horse, lifts it's tail, and kiss's the horse's A$$.

Another cowboy standing nearby ask's him "Why did you do that!!??"

"I have chapped lip's" he answers

"And that cures chapped lips!!??"

"No" he says

"But it sure keeps me from licking them!"

This is just a variation of the common Carmex addiction urban legend. The addiction part that is. You can look it up on just about any urban legend site such as Snopes.

In your case, you say that your lips dry out when the Chapstick isn't applied. That's what's supposed to happen. The reason you are applying it in the first place is to avoid dry lips, then when you don't apply it you get dry lips. The observation that your lips seem abnormally dry is just because of the perceived feeling from the recent use.

I will say though that I don't care for Chapstick because of the waxiness. I like to use the Vaseline Lip Therapy.

See I heard the same thing, my girlfriend told me that the medicated stuff would make your lips get hooked on it. I thought it was kind of odd but I am like alright I will try something else. She suggested this stuff called Burt's Beeswax Lip Balm, and it is awsome. This stuff is kind of peperminty and its just really good. I am glad a switched.

Well there's actually some degree of truth to the Carmex addiction rumor... One of the main ingredients is alum, which is a drying agent (ask any chemist). The reason it's there? Look on the jar... Carmex is for COLD SORES... For the uninitiated, cold sores are simply herpes simplex A's way of expressing itself. Herpes is a virus, so once you've got it, you've got it for life (same goes for simplex B, the genital variety). The sores are really gross (quite glad I'm not speaking from experience) and you're supposed to put Carmex on them so that they dry up. The sooner they dry up and scab over, the sooner they're gone.

So if you use Carmex on your lips, they are going to dry out... the other ingredients lubricate, however, so you won't know until the lubrication has worn off. Who knows to what degree the alum in Carmex actually makes a difference, but it is there.

However, there's no "addictive" chemical in any lip balm. I use a neutrogina lip moisturizer... pretty nice stuff! Gotta love the norwegians!

Take that, snopes.

<< Hmm, so maybe the Alum is to blame? :p I think i'll experiment with different brands. >>

Check the ingredients label... I don't think ChapStik has alum in it. It shouldn't anyway because it is meant for lips (unlike Carmex). Use whatever you like though.

If you're really paranoid, use vaseline. Can't get much purer than that!

Try to drink 8+ glasses of water a day, and your lips will start looking healthier, naturally!

Go to the dermetologist and get some perscription stuff....i just finished my acutane and throughout the whole time i had cracked lips like bleeding sometime then i started using this perscription stufff which was like an ointment for everything not just chapped lips, and after that everything was perfect and if my lips get dry i put it on and its fine for likea few days again...
