I am about to ditch 9 months old CD-RW for DVD drive that allows me to back up hard drives and some of movies I was working on with Premiere.
So which drive is good and cheap.

I had a NEC 4x for 2 years and burned more than 600 dvds and it still works (my brother has it)
currently I am using a Pioneer 108 16x and it works like charm

any LiteON Pioneer or NEC will do the job .. and statistically the last a LOT!

Pioneer DVR 109

it is too expensive for me.

AFAIK, the DVR 109 is the cheaper OEM model, while the DVR A09 is the costlier retail version.

The DVR 109's cost should be on par with LiteOn and other DVD burners.

NEC & BenQ ...or so I've heard.

have dealt with nec ones back to 1100a and benq to 800a ..I prefer the benq as in my 1620 but have a liteon 812s/832s as well as a nec 3500ag ..but best results ..benq 🙂

I ordered Benq 1620 to replace the Benq 800a that I've been using. $49.99 at Newegg. It doesn't get any better.

Looks like the PX-716A just got a Max PC 'Kickass Award' in April 05, if that means anything to you.

I would bet the Fry's doesnt carry the NEC or BenQ. I would also bet that Fry's sells the Plextor for ~$140 or more, where as you could get the same drive online for ~$100 or get the NEC or Benq online for ~$60.

how about CompUSA or Best Buy? I don't like mail order thing because I hate to miss work when the package delievery service arrives.

Sure you can go to Compusa and/or Best Buy/Circuit City. you'll just be paying as much as 75% more for the same item.

I don't know if Fry's sells OEM stuff but if they don't you can probably find the NEC or Benq in a 3rd party packager's box (like Pacific Digital or I/O Magic). May play hell trying to find out what's in the box though.
