Which Athlon XP to buy... lower and OC or higher?

Definately will be buying an Athlon XP in the next few days. I am now running a Duron 700@933 on my ECS K7S5A motherboard.

I'm thinking maybe getting a 1700+ and overclocking it, but I'm curious how it would fair on this motherboard. I know both are overclockable, but what do you think I could realistically expect with this combo? Anyone already out there with results?

Also, I am using a Thermaltake Volcano 6 (I believe its 6, maybe 5), and I am wondering if it will be enough for this processor. I assume its probably about the minimum I should use. I know it was about 1C off of the alphas that were out when I got it.

I don't have any experience with your mobo, so I can't help you there. But, you'll prob be better off with a 1600+ than a 1700+. People seem to be taking them further, and they are cheaper too.
 
Sorry for the double post. The O/Cing abilities of ur mobo is somewht ltd. I'll stick to a higher CPU using tht mobo combo.
 
Well, with CPU FSB (the program) my board's FSB becomes pretty changable... or is it just the fact that it can't hold high FSB settings?

Also, what are the semi cheap boards that can handle the higher speeds these days? Is the ASUS nForce board a decent board for OC? I see its about $80 on pricewatch.

One of the things we try to remind folks of here is to consolidate their threads or limit the posting in multiple forums of the same topic. It saves bandwidth, etc. Your question has been asked/addressed by you in the MB forum. Granted, you "reworded" it a bit here, but try to keep within the framework if you can.
What you are asking is what CPU should you get for the highest possible FSB (if anyone knows) with the K7S5A. As was mentioned in your other thread; no one can predict that. Lacking that, what other board (inexpensive) will give you the highest possible overclocking possibilities? Read your other thread please.
 
Come on, that's completely ridiculous. One asking about what a board would do, and one asking advice on which to buy. I guess I could have consolidated them into one post... Half of which belongs in one forum, half of which belongs in the other.

The two 'HOT' tips in AMD chips now is for the XP1600+ from NewEgg for $ 53 that a lot of the enthusiasts have been getting some really impressive performance out of,
and the other being the XP1900+ AGOGA core - again from NewEgg for $ 95, which also has tremondous possibilities. Both are free freight. Flip a coin - and if it stands on
edge get both. This forum is loaded with tech info from people who got the 'GREEN AROIA' which is the XP1600+, and this comes from the same silicon wafers that the XP2000+s and the XP2100+s are made from, so even though the individual results can vary - the BIG potential is there. You won't know 'till you light the fire.

 
The "hot" chip right now is the $53 1600+ from Newegg (AROIA - Y) . I got mine on Friday, fired it up, and it's running at 1743 (10.5x166) using default voltage (1.75). That's better than 2100+ performance for $53! 🙂 I have a K7S5A on another machine and I didn't see an adjustment for voltage in the latest overclocking bios, so my choice for you would be the 1600+. Great potential at default vcore. I think there is even a 166/166 setting in the latest K7S5A o/c bios, too. I know there is at least a 150/150 setting. For $53, it's a no brainer. 🙂

I not only answered your (other) thread but made a suggestion in a friendly manner. You respond with this?? I would suggest that if you continue this course, you won't have to worry about consolidating your threads; there will be no option for you to post.
Again, I gave you some friendly advice. Take it as that.

Well,...... either that or you can "waste your 2KB" elsewhere. Get a grip; at least untill you've been around long enough to khow how things are done, nooob!
 
FWIW:

I'm in the same scenario as Zodder up there, I just got one of those $53.00 AROIA-Y chips, threw it in my K7S5A and with CPUFSB program fired it up at 166FSB. Now I also have a $53.00 XP2100+ chip! This is at default vore voltage (one thing that I cannot change with the program).

I also have an AGOIA XP1600 which will only do 1800+ in that same motherboard. I did however threw this chip into my new EPOX board and it had no problem @ 166FSB (2100+) at default voltage - guess it just didn't like the ECS board? Those ARIOA-Y chips sure seem to like the K7S5A though!

I've been around here since this was THE hot deals board. Had to reregister because it won't accept aol usernames, and now i finally have one it will accept.
