Which athlon xp chipset to get? Don't have $$$ for 2 x 512mb sticks.

I know the nforce 2 is the fastest and best, as long as you run dual channel. But I don't have $160 to get 2 sticks of some decent 512mb pc2700 or $200 plus to get some corsair pc3200. I do have lots of 256mb sticks of samsung and infineon pc2700 ram, and rather have them stacked to 512mb ram (better overall performance) instead of 256mb of dual channel ram. Should I go kt400?

i still would go with nf2....dual channel is just a little better, but i think single channel is still as fast if not faster than the kt400.

What are you talking about, 2 slabs of 256mg = 512mg, does not matter if it is dual Ch or single.

Go nForce2

I think Naruto misunderstands how dual-channel works. He's thinking RAID-1 instead of RAID-0. Naruto, if you put two sticks of 256MB in an Nforce2 board, you will get 512MB of dual-channel RAM. The board adds them together. Two sticks of 256MB in non-dual-channel boards will be 512MB worth of two sticks. In a dual-channel board two 256MB sticks become kinda like a SINGLE 512MB of memory (to put it really simply).

Oh, so putting two of my 256 pc2700 sticks gives me 512mb dual channel pc2700. Yeah I was confused cause I read somewhere discussing the Canterwood P4 chipset and how it requires double the ram. So are all dual channel boards able to do this or only the nforce 2?

All dual channel do this. Canterwood is strictly a DC board, thats why 2 sticks are required. Nforce2 supports both DC and SC.
