Which Athlon model should i take

I have a model 2 athlon, 512k 1/2 speed cache. would a model 4 128k full speed be a better cpu? or should i stick with mine, both are 700mhz (no idea on the core speed) and it would be an even trade, so there would be no cost...what would you guys do? what are the disatvantages?


 
I assume you mean a Duron? The Model 4 Athlon (T-Bird) comes with 256k of L2, on-die, cache. If you are refering to a T-Bird, it is slightly faster, but has some known issues with the KX-133 chipset(KA7). If it is indeed a Duron (128K L2 cache) then you will not even be able to use it with your mobo, it is a Socket "A", not a Slot "A". I personally would stick with the classic, but the T-bird might be a little faster for you. The only thing is that it may not be as stable, or it might be just fine. It is really up to you. If indeed it is a T-Bird, why does someone want to trade it for a "classic" Athlon?
 
(yeah it is 256k my fault) well, because where get our chips from a clasic athlon is 10 bucks more then the thunderbird, and we ordered a clasic athlon and got this instead, so i dunno if i should keep it yet or not, im gonna mess with over clocking, and see what i can do then decide 😀
 
ok well ive decided on the classic, cause i cant even get the other to clock to 800, on a side note, why wouldnt the new version of wcpuid say its a thunderbird and not an athlon model 4, after all it says it now supports duron/thunderbird
 
Not sure on that one..I know other than the on-die, full speed cache, the T-Bird, Duron and "classic" Athlon are almost indentical internally. Does it say it is a model 4, or does it say it is a T-Bird? I know the T-Bird was just a pre-release name, and officially it is a "Athlon with Performance Enhancing Cache" from AMD. AMD has their own CPUID program, maybe you should give that a try. I think you made the right choice. I am waiting fo the next generation T-Birds and Mustangs. They are reportedly bumping up the EV6 bus to 266mhz, and re-working the core a little. The Mustangs are supposed to reach speeds of over 2ghz...
 
the one with the 256k cache. the 256 one runs at full speed and since most apps won't use near 256 it would be better to get the faster one rather than the bigger one. As tests show the one with the 256k cache runs around 10 - 15 percent faster.
