Tolstoy's War and Peace...it's just too damn long to keep my attention. I read maybe 2/3 of it then gave up.

I found Crime & Punishment to be torturous and repetitive, but I finished it.

I quit reading Thoreau's Walden after five pages, and I never did that with any other book that was required reading at my high school.

I suppose I've read worse books, but not ones that are supposed "classics"

Go take some ritalin, will ya? That book is simply incredible, I could not stop thinking about it for months after. Its so rich and you can get so much out of it.

Anyway the worst one I can remember is the first Shanara book. It was horrible - a cheap LotR retelling, bad writing, highly repetitive etc. Simply awful.

Yeah, Thoreau is pretty painful, and overrated, to boot. Another one I hated that was required reading in school was The Scarlet Letter. Lame, utterly lame..

Scarlet Letter wasn't that bad compared to some other things I had to read in HS. In terms of readability that is and I've read books with worse stories. Worst book I've read is probably Beloved. Couldn't stand it, had to read it for 11th or 12th grade AP English over the summer :(

I work 12am to 8am and my job is to basically sit in a chair all night so I read a lot and mostly trash :).

The two lowest rated, yes I am a geek and keep a list, books I have read are When Wolves Cry by Africa, Chris which was plain awfull and one people might actually know Salem's Lot by King. I can't remember why I hated it so much. One of these days I will have to reread it just to find out since it suppose to be pretty good.

Catcher in the Rye & A Clockwork Orange were the two non-school-related books that I didn't finish.

I actually liked Great Gatsby.

I guess my two least favorites would be "Madame Bovary" (waah, waah, I live in France and I didn't want to marry my husband), and "The Awakening" (waah waah, I live in New Orleans and my husband's rich and we hire someone to raise our kids, but that's not enough, I want to marry someone else, waah, waah)...:|

I am a philosophy major . . ..

Just kidding - all the philo books are incredible reads IMO, but the worst book I've read has to be the Illiad, there's not heroes in there - wait, maybe Hector, but he's on the losing side! Pissed me off! :|

Paul Fussell - Doing Battle. Yeah, I'm a history major. He wrote a pretty decent book until he reached his teaching experience...it went from tolerable to "I am so great". Ugh...absolutely awful.

Great Gatsby
Wuthering Heights
War and Peace

You guys are bitching about some GOOD books! WH is one of my favorites. Of course, I'm an English major, so maybe I just get the style and can enjoy it.

My list:

Lovelock - Orson Scott Card. Card's written some good books. THIS ONE IS NOT ONE OF THEM.
Anything Heinlein
The sequels to "Rendevouz with Rama" - Clarke.

I like sci fi, but some of the stuff out there is such trash.

Remember the movie The Bourne Identity? Turns out it was based on a book by Robert Ludlum (I think?) and was part of a series. Those books were awful, so corny.

Wuthering Heights was a GREAT book. Wonderful characters.

As far as bad books go, Rudolf Bultman's "The Theology of the New Testament" was pretty awful. Blending the excessive verbiage of post-modernism with Biblical exegesis was _not_ a good idea.
