He has an ipod touch 5th gen but wants an Android tablet. I am thinking Nexus 7 for price/performance but am wondering if I should possibly get him something else due to no micro sd. What would you suggest? When is the Nexus 7 due for an update?

what does he want to use it for?
why would he need the micorsd? if you have a large music collection and must access it where you have no wifi, then maybe it's adeal breaker (otherwise use Google Music and leave the music in the cloud).
Nexus 7 is definitely a good choice otherwise.

I would imagine younger people are less dependent on micro SD slot than us older folks, because they are more comfortable streaming their content.

I'd say get a 32GB Nexus, that should be sufficient enough space for most people.

I'd recommend the Nexus 7 if a new one wasn't going to be announced in like 2 months.

Nexus 7 with the best onboard storage and you don't need to worry about getting him an SD card. Unless he's already torrenting stuff, he won't fill up the built-in storage.

On the other hand, if it's your brother's kid, just buy a drum set. Or any other kind of loud instrument. It's worth it. Trust me.

Maybe one could be announced at Google IO like the Nexus 7 was last year. But it could probably be another two months after that before it launches.

But seriously, while Nexus 7 has been out for more than 6 months, it wasn't widely available until october-ish when Google doubled its storage. I know we are now being tsunami'ed by announcements, but I wonder how long it will take before this next gen products hit the market at reasonable price points.

The best bang-for-the-buck after Nexus 7 is, well, Nexus 10. If you can ignore its somewhat ugly form, its performance is unmatched by anything available today. Since 11 year old may not be so sensitive to rounded edges, it would definitely make him happy. I know I would be if one were gifted to me. 16 GB version + USB OTG is the way to go. From what I've heard, you don't need to root it for simple media consumption.

You don't need to root it anymore. There's a few apps that let's you access media via OTG. I couldn't get my replacement N7 rooted using wugz(?) toolkit & didn't feel like putting much effort into it since it was mainly for my daughter so I think I paid $1.99 for one of the apps.

Nook HD+ seems like a good buy for a 9" tablet. If you don't like their limited version of Android, it can be rooted.

I have nexus 7 for my 7 and 8 year old, and one took a fall off my desk onto concrete. Was fine. However, that was in the Amzer case.
