So I am going to be in the market for a new phone (finally) to replace my ancient and breaking down old Verizon LG Chocolate 3. I definitely prefer an Android phone, however...there two MAJOR factors in the iPhone's favor:
1) Quality of display. Resolution, contrast and color accuracy. (size not important)
2) Quality of camera

As a photographer, these are the two most important things to me by far. I don't want to hear any of that photographers use apple stuff nonsense. Well they do often, but I don't. :) I like PC's and an Android phone is much more my style.

Is there any word on up and coming android phones that will have display and camera quality matching that of the iPhone 4?? I'd like to stay on Verizon.

for the screen, i would probably have to say any of the samsung galaxy S lineup. and since you are on verizon, that would be the samsung fascinate. the camera is a tossup and im easy to please, but i believe the fascinates camera is really good, especially for 5MP.

http://www.anandtech.com/Show/Index...fascinate-review-verizons-galaxy-s-smartphone - at's review on the phone. thats directly on the camera page, be sure to start on page one for the full review!

edit: forgot to mention that the galaxy S lineup of phones are on every carrier (at&t, sprint, tmobile, verizon, us cellular), and they all have the same 4.0" super amoled screen with 5MP camera. :)

Camera quality wise, I'm not sure which one would be the best. What I do know is that the HTC cameras are kinda crappy.

The EVO has a gorgeous 4.3 foot screen with a total of 11 gigatexels worth of camera. You can also control the space shuttle with it with an app on the marketplace.

From what i remember the Droid X and Incredible had better cameras than the Iphone 4. I know the Incredible takes better pictures.

From what I remember, the iPhone4 has the best camera. The incredible has the same camera as the EVO, so its probably not too good.

Thanks guys. I found some testing of displays done at displaymate.com and it showed the motorola droid with it's IPS LCD dispaly as having very good color, contrast, if not the total resolution of the iphone. Anyway...I am going to hold just a bit longer to see reviews on some of the new phones about to release. Hopefully there will be some discusion of camera quality on those as well.

When you pick one; find Vignette in the Market. Best out of all the Retro effect apps.
Also; the lens covers are made out of horrible plastics that retain smears. These small lenses and tiny sensors always require a quick wipe. I use a tshirt.

You should never ever buy ANY phone for the camera. But if thats your main issue, go for the latest iPhone you can afford. Out of all the shitty phone cameras available, they are the least shitty.

OR get a real camera and use any damn phone you want. Then you will only have to purchase one item once, and upgrade the other rarely. Instead of having to upgrade a single, expensive item frequently and worry about losing features even though you gain a smidgen of image quality or vice-versa.

On both fronts, the original Droid is definitely not the best. Screen quality has to go to Galaxy S phones, but the Droid X, in personal experience, is quite nice and the camera is very pleasing.

Galaxy S has the best display (Voodoo corrects color balance issues, though currently it's only active at full brightness), but not the best camera (the camera *app* -- with touch to focus -- is quite nice however). The LED flash on my Fascinate, incidentally, is infinitely better than the iPhone 4 version -- that thing is useless.

The Sony X10 might actually be the best smartphone camera, but the rest of it sucks. ;)

I have a DSLR, lenses, flashes, umbrellas, lightstands ect. Whenever I know I want best photo quality...I'll use that. When I don't want to carry that however, I'd like a reasonably decent camera ability in my phone ..without carrying a small camera AND a phone. Cell phone cameras have come a long way and are rapidly overtaking the low end point and shoot market.

I was just looking more closely at the fascinate. This definitely looks nice! I would of course root it immediately.

I can snap a few pictures as best I can if you want to see the quality.

EDIT: I'm no photographer, and don't take pics, but the camera is pretty cool. Click on the screen and it focuses to an area...nice zoom, albeit lowering the quality a lot.

iPhone 4 has the best camera. No one can argue that. The original Droid still has the best color accuracy of any phone out there. The iPhone 4's screen undersaturates as much as the Galaxy S oversaturates so that's give and take. Resolution is great on the iPhone 4 but the screen is tiny compared to competition so you have to see what's more important for you. Most reviewers would choose larger screen size over higher dpi but it's all up to you.

See, what I don't understand is that apparently Apple (did or still does) converts the quality to SD when uploding to YouTube through their uploader.

Fascinate doesn't take bad up close images...

The iPhone loads HD to Youtube now. Apple updated it from SD to HD.
