The 8800GT beats the 3870 in many benchmarks, so I'd go with the 8800GT.

Beware, it does run a bit hot and if cooling is a priority, go with the 3870's much more suitable double-slotted cooler.

Raw performance best goes to the 8800GT. And its only $10 more than the 3870 with the rebate factored in. Assuming the prices hold as is and both are availble at the same time (takes 1-3 weeks for the 3870) I'd get the 8800GT. But thats just me.

8800GT definitely.

Nvidia has ATI 1upped on visual fidelity. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw how much better 4xAA for my 8800GT was compared to ATI's 4xAA

not to mention 16xQ!

OR

how much better the anisotropic filtering is compared to ATI.

For the record, I just upgraded from x1900xtx crossfire

3870 is only for those who need the cooling solution really. You should go with the 8800GT like everyone is saying

What resolution do you run at? At medium and low resolutions it really doesn't matter whether you get a 3870 or 8800 GT.

I have 2 Sapphire Radeon HD 3870s in XFire and they rock in conjunction with my Intel Q6600 at 3.8GHz. They overclock like a dream, especially the GDDR4!

I decided to go ATI because of superior IQ over the 8800GT especially 16x AF.

A superior card over the 8800GT no holds barred!

I'd do with the 3870 if you want to save a little money. For better performance get the 8800GT. IQ Levels between cards are so close now it's almost pointless to argue the differences. (I said almost) If you think Nvidia's colors don't appear as vibrant as you'd like, you can use Digital Vibrance. You can't go wrong selecting either card really.

I hadn't heard this before, at least not very often. Do you have any screenies for comparison?

Since when had ATI's IQ been better? Everyone besides you says Nvidia has surpassed anything ATI has in IQ, and we already know about the performance.

Please have a look at this article.

I keep hearing time and time again that Nvidia has the better image quality, but this article says otherwise and has screen shots. Why is this? Drivers? Is VR-Zone is paid by ATI? Maybe ATI actaully has as good or better image quality?

Those are completely subjective. How do we know that the so called 'better tonal range' isn't simply because of real time lighting? Especially in a game like crysis that has day and night cycles. An extreme example, to illustrate my point, is to take a pic of 12pm for Nvidia and a 6pm pic with the ati cards: Look how much better ati's image quality is! -_-

The pics of FEAR I provided are pretty illustrative of the difference in AF and AA.

This is coming from a guy who bought x1k over 7800GTX because the image quality for AF was considerably better.

Yea, but your pics compare an Nvidia 8800 series card to a Radeon 1950 series card. I thought that there were improvements made with the 38x0 series cards. I bet images rendered by a Radeon x1800 look better then a GeForce 4 Ti4200. ;)

Hehe you got me there. I remember I saw an article that showed SOME AF improvement with > X1K cards...but I can't find it. :cookie: to whoever can :)
(I remember it not being a huge improvement, however). I'll try to find some articles showing the difference in AA modes for the current gen cards.

The 8800GT you have pictured has the older fan/cooler that's very loud and I wouldn't get it. I got a XFX 8800GT with a newer cooler thats quieter. Other makers are coming out with new coolers too. Here are some YouTube clips with older cooler (with smaller fan)

I might still RMS my XFX for a 3870. I like the idea of hardware supported HDR and AA on at the same time with next Vista service pack - not to mention the tessellation rendering engine. The HDMI features are also a plus for me. Mostly I know they are quieter. Even my newer model 8800GT is louder than I want. I could do the accelero mod but from what I heard of the 3870 I might get to use it as is. Crossfire will also be much more viable in near future than the SLI. I also keep reading the ATI cards may not always lead in fps benches but they do better with their filters on which I like. I know guys who want to "shoot fast" and like that fps stuff and turn off all the rendering refinements so Nvidia is good card for them. I should probably keep 8800GT so I can have both types because Nvidia does do scaling better.

Here's interesting ATI clip if you can stand the dude doing it:
