OK, I'm really confused...how many flavors of XP CPUs are there these days? If I understand right, there is the Palomino, the Thoroughbred A and the Thoroghbred B....is that right? And further, the TBred B is the best to have. BUT...which XPs come in all three flavors and how do I tell which one I am getting before I order it? If I order an XP2000+ retail from Googlegear, what am I going to get? Pls help this n00b make sense of it all....

there's barton now too.. basically just a t-bred B with 512KB L2 Cache..

I'd recommend getting a 2100+ t-bred B.. they overclock REALLY well... most of them will hit at least 2.3GHz - 2.4GHz on AIR..

Or if you only want to spend $50-60 on a CPU, an XP 1700+ TBred B is also a great overclocker. Almost everyone now is reporting TBred B's from newegg for the OEMs. No A reports for 2 weeks or so. The 2100+ from newegg is guaranteed TBred B, but it's like $92 if I remember right.

I wouldn't say that most get 2.3-2.4 on air, maybe with like 1.85-1.9v, but for the most part they get around 2.2 @ 1.8v, I wouldn't feel very safe about going over 1.8v on a .13u procoessor using air cooling

this your mobo?

it supports 266fsb max, so I think the fastest cpu you can fit into it is a XP2400+; not sure if a 2600+ amd was made with a 266fsb also, maybe. I think that cpu btw is a Throughbred B, but really its not important unless you are very interested in overclocking.

A XP2000+ is also fine for that mobo, but is at least in theory available in both Palamino (older) or Throughbred (newer). Again, unless youre overclocking, I doubt it matters much or at all to you. Probably it will still be a Palamino, although afaik AMD are in the process of, or are intending on, replacing all palamino production with throughbred. I guess the cpu you get will be either a Palamino if amd arent that quick at changing production for older models, and/or your chosen e-tailer hasnt sold off it's Palamino inventory yet. If amd are quick amd so is you e-tailer at flogging cpus, maybe it will be a Throughbred. Cant say what it will be and tbh i wouldnt really care even if it was for myself.

AFAIK:
XP1500+ to 2100+ : is or was available in Palamino, 133/266FSB.
XP1700+ to 2400+ : is or is intended to be available in Throughbred, A/B?, 133/266FSB. [Maybe a 2600+ t-bred too?].
XP2600+ to 2800+ : is available as Throughbred A/B?, 333 FSB.
XP2500+, 2700+, 2800+ and up : is or will be available as Barton, 333fsb,

edit: and this thread might help you determine which youve got.

Nope, This is my mobo...

Not the pro version, just the much hated vanilla...been very dependable for me tho, so far...

Thanks for all the input, so I guess it all means I get what I get, unless I go with newegg which has been doing 1700+ and 2100+ in Tbred B of late...

I have a 1700+ Tbred B, that's currently at 2.02GHz on stock voltage, and air cooling.

For £50, i can't complain!

How do you find out which Thorough Bred you have? All I now is that I've got an XP1700+, oh yeah, how do I overclock it? I'm wanting to go as high as possible on just my only fan in my comp, the processor fan ;), ummm, yeah, is that called air cooling? o_O

If you look at the last few digits of the 1st line, if it reads DLT3C then it's Tbred A, if it's DUT3C, then it's Tbred B. If it's DMT3C, then it's Palamino (i'm pretty sure thats what it is, it's all off the top of my head)

Air cooling means using a heatsink and fan, as opposed to water cooling, which uses waterblock, pump, radiator etc :)

It's only the newer (as in last month or so) Athlon XPs that are Tbreds, all earlier ones are Palamino.

Is this on the chip or is there a program that can find out which one?
I get the feeling though it's a Palamino, bought it back around August last year.
