I am trying to decide between the AMD Opteron 175 Denmark and the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Toledo. The chip will be on an Asus A8NSli Premium.

Any thoughts both good or bad?
Thanks,
J.

Primarily because I don't know what the hell I am doing:) I've tried researching but just got confused. Also it seems like it takes a TON of time to fine tune which I don't have:(

Opteron dual core is not overclocking as well as opteron single core (which is overclocking better than almost everything lol). I'd reccomend you stick with the X2.

The Opteron 165s overclock at least as well as the X2 3800+ and they are considerably cheaper. No reason to buy an X2 since the Dual Core Opterons are cheaper at each price point.

Add a poll, I would go with the Opteron Denmark- Cool running, Stable, and Rumor has it they overclock well.

Good idea Googer. Lets assume though that my budget is 4-500 clams (wife will flip her wig if she finds out :) ) and I initially don't plan to overclock.

Good for you, I always delay any overclocking activities untill my PC is on it's last leg and no more CPU's are being sold for it. 1.4GHz Tualtin Server Chip 512K full speed cache and I still have not overclocked it yet, even though I have a revision 2 heatsink from swiftech.

Get the Opteron, performance at stock will be the same, however you do get the opteron case badge.

Opteron...had I known at the time when I got my X2 that opterons made such good substitutes, I would have gotten an opteron instead as well.

I don't know anything about opterons, but there must be some down-side to them, or AMD wouldn't have bothered releasing the X2 series.

Their server processors clocked slower than X2s. The reason theyre so good is because they are tested hard and are the very stable overclockable processors. A 165 for $350CDN or so can reach 2.7ghz with proper air cooling.

Just get a Opteron 165 for $295 to prevent your wife from flipping out. As for OCing, they prob both go up to the same clock, but the Opteron has been tested more extensively and is a newer redesign.
I would go for the Opteron just for the better reliability and stability. (which means its better for OCing too ...)

And why the hell are the 6800 Ultra's still selling for at least $440 when a 7800GT can be had for $310?
