Which AMD CPU to get for an older motherboard (IWILL KK266)??

Im looking to get either a 8500 or Ti4200 to go with a new CPU. I've heard of the 1600+ being good overclockers, but with my old mobo and RAM, I wouldn't be able to o/c a lot, would I?

what I have:

AMD Athlon 1 GHz on KK266
512 PC133 SDRam
Geforce 2 GTS

The KK266 running with the AMD XP's are a chance in themselves...esp if you have the 1.0 Rev and/or non plus

dude, i think that is a little too much lipstick for that pig. time to join the year 2002 before it is over and go to a DDR mobo. what is the point of OCing a SDRAM system when the memory will be your bottleneck for performance? your best bet is to get a nice refurb KT333 mobo with a 1600+ chip. get some decent PC2700 RAM too, and boost the FSB to 166 with the 1/5th divider.

but you see, you'll have to get a new mobo, video card, chip, and RAM. that's quite a bit a dough. your system is pretty good by itself--why don't you just save your cash and get a KT400 (should be called a KT333a) mobo, good DDR, and a 2400+ chip when they come out. i'll bet you hit FSB 166 with the chip and blow away your old system.

hmm.. i guess an XP cpu 's not a good idea 😱 .. let alone overclocking it

guess my upgrade options are really limited huh? Maybe I'll follow master yoda's advice and just hang on to my system for a while longer til I REALLY need to upgrade it.

I would buy for the future. Buy a cpu that you will use in the future on a newer motherboard. Who cares if it is not as fast as it could be now. A few months from now you can get another motherboard and ram and put the cpu you get in there. Personally I would go to newegg.com and get whatever chip is the best for your pocketbook. If you want to overclock get the xp 1600+. They have really good steppings. Now for compatability......... I would read around in here and make sure that cpu works well with that motherboard. Do a search for the kk266. Also I would get the nvidia card to avoid driver headaches with the 8500.
