I currently have the 3500+ stock and basically in Counter-Strike Source on Big open maps i get massive FPS drops..

Which should i consider as an upgrade X2 or FX? or is there something wrong with the PC I built?

What res and quality are you playing at ? A newer processor will not help you with that issue. How are you determining these FPS drops and how low do they get ? Have you tried newer vid card drivers or defragging your systems. Your PC should have no problems with that game.

How many fps do you get during the video stress test ? I have a 6600GT with a similar setup as yours and get approx 85.

Im using 1600x900 Everything HIGH BUT Anti is off and Windowed Mode.

Basically from 120 fps drops down to 20-30fps.

Like maps like cs_compond and such.. anything

I have yet to determind why it happens my brother has the same chip but PCI-E and neo4 and his pc runs fine.

I did a fresh format.. newest drivers.. flashed bios.

I even have a heat issue i think cuz the game locks up so I have a fan next to it which fixed that problem..

Its all stock speeds i dont even understand why it heats up so much.

Your CPU should be fine. Sounds more like driver issues or something messy on your system. If you can't clean it up it a reformat would be the most drastic measure to improve performance.

Failing that the next best steps you could take to improve game performance would be to upgrade your video card and/or RAM to 2GB. Big open map slow downs sounds like somethings funky with your video drivers, perhaps you're running too high a res with too high AA/AF. Then there's the possibility of RAM being an issue with too much other stuff running in the backround and you're running out of system memory when you hit the big open maps forcing windows to page file to the HDD.

If you still want a CPU and are seriously considering putting down the money for as much as an FX, I'd say get the X2. Even if you had a single 7800GTX (which you don't, because you have a 6800GT), you'd still be fine with your 3500+. And X2 would be just as good for games and you'd then get the bennefits of dual core.

I have AA/AF off .. If i put 2gigs of ram then i lose out on dual channel.

I might consider reverting back to my Asus A8v Dex where i always had a stable system and no issues.

is it possible to run 2gigs of ram Dual?

You might want to try not playing in windowed mode. That can cause some strange problems occasionally.

Drop all your video settings way down (800x600, no aa/af) and see if it still happens. Then crank everything up to the max and check again.

Your CPU is fine.

Your GPU is fine.

Upgrading to a 4000+ would be a waste.

Upgrading to an X2 just for gaming would be a waste, it does benifit other things though.

I just remembered, I knew two people with that motherboard with similer problems.

Disable fast writes, it just may fix your problems.

I havent looked while gaming but before i turn on all my fans inside the pc the game freezes randomly and once theyre all on.. no more lockups.

something else is wrong with your setup. Try downloading the PCI Latency tool and setting your 6800s lat to 64. Also try updating to just the GART driver from the 6.53 Beta nforce drivers. That has helped a lot of people with Nforce 3 boards and higher end video cards who have freezing or stuttering issues.

P.S. How many sticks of RAM do you have? You shouldn't be losing dual channel. What Bios revision are you running?

GART driver.. have no clue to what that is.. man i sound like a noob, right now im using the nforece 5.10 drivers.. Ill download that PCI latency tool see what it says..

I also just bought the Kingwin Artic Water Cooling system.. should be getting it in a week.

Bios 1.8 2 x 512 .

I dont think the boards support 4 x 512 dual channel.. is what i was addressing.

Your temps are perfectly fine, assuming those are idle temps. Its not that bad of a thing if the comptuer overheats when you have no fans on, the fans are there for a reason (to make the computer not overheat), so without them its logical that it would overheat.

There is definately something else wrong with your system, but I don't know what it is. Did you try disabling fast write like someone suggested?

yes its disabled both in bios and in windows display settings.

I think it might be the motherboard, I never had a problem with my Asus A8V Dex.

I'll probably just sell this MSI..the headaches arent worth it anymore.

Try running a few passes of 3dmark 2005 (at default settings) and see what score you get. I get about 3800. You should score higher since you have a better video card. It will give you a good indication of if there is an issue with your system. Do any other games have this issue or is it just CS ? Do not play in windowed mode. I play at 1280 X 1024 high settings 4X AA and 16X AA and get about 85 fps during the video stress test. Try out those settings and let me know what you get. Do you have any programs running in the bckground (AV, firewall ?)

One more thing that comes to mind, try setting your graphics aperature size to 256MB

What's your BFG running at? If you run a couple loops of 3d mark 2k5 you should bench around the same that I do if you're oc'd fairly well.

Everything is running stock speeds i ran prime95 for 18hours no errors.

I have yet to run 3dmark actually.

Since i only play cs:s its the only the game it does it in.

abd the AGP size is already set @ 256mb.

Have you tried playing in non-windowed mode and turning the settings all the way up followed by all the way down to see if any of those three fix the problem?
