My advice? Go for it! You should really be happy with an upgrade of that magnitude.

Also, try to get the 2600X if you can, if you go that route. Given sufficient cooling, it should auto-OC much higher than the 2600. The only reason to get the non-X variants of the 2nd-gen Ryzen CPUs (2000-series), is if power-consumption is a concern. (For example, an ITX board in a HTPC.)

Edit: For boards, my friend just picked up an MSI B450 Tomahawk ATX board, seems decent. Some of the Gigabyte Aorus boards look pretty good too.

For my Ryzen R5 1600 CPUs, I picked out ASRock AB350M Pro4 boards, because they were: 1) inexpensive, 2) available, and 3) fairly feature-rich. But they're definitely not quite a top-tier board. But they're versatile.

The 2600X clocks higher out of the box 9x iirc, but it would be funny if the 2600 was faster stock.

I care more about voltage at same clocks. If the 2600 can maintain the same clocks at the same voltage as the 2600X, then the 2600 is a good choice.

But if the 2600X is stable at a lower voltage, 2600x all the way.

thread jack? its the same chip! they just clock the 2600x higher. Look at all the reviews shows identical power usage between the two chips at same freq. I dont think they are special binned chips if you ask me, because the 2600 i have seen did better than 2600x overclock at same volt. BUt really id like so see the numbers from soemone elses review but hard to see them both overclocked in same review.

I use the ASUS B450M-A board with Ryzen-G processors for my computer builds, no problems whatsoever (Win10).

Tip: If you're using the AMD Wraith cooler, install it so the AMD logo on the cooler is on the opposite side to the RAM (ie. as far as possible from it) - that side of the cooler sticks out a smidgen more and makes access to the first RAM slot more difficult.

i've been binging buildzoids pcb reviews, not all x470 boards have adequate vrm or heatsinks for overclocking. it's quite the rabbithole but when you pay the extra for a x470 you need to know what you are looking for; some have good bios some have good vrm some have good heatsinks, almost none have all 3.

the msi mortar/tomahawk/carbon have gotten some good mentions from buildzoid, the main downside being no offset voltage for OC which drives up power usage/heat.

i got a asrock b450 pro for my 2700x, but kinda regret it now. though i may end up getting a msi board and using a ryzen2200g in the asrock as a nas server.

I'm starting to look around as well, but seeing the DDR4 prices still so inflated is killing my build enthusiasm. Trying to buy what I want on a budget is a bad way to start, as I'd be better served selling my current pile of leftover hardware to get a better idea of what I can actually buy, and re-using my case, PSU, and 290x to save on the build cost.

Ideally, I'd be buying as Asus Prime x470 Pro with a Ryzen 2600 at MC, then adding a Samsung 960 Evo 500GB NVMe and whatever RAM is on sale at the time. But I really can't take advantage of the X470, so I'd then go with the MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon and the same 2600. They are currently OOS at MC for my location. With the RAM still so high, I'm now looking at ditching the NVMe 960 purchase and re-using my Samsung Evo 850 SATA.

I had $110 budgeted for 2x8GB sticks, but, again, if I had my choice, I'd pair up the snazzy Team T-Force or the G.Skill TridentZ RGB sticks with the X470's heatsink RGB .. it's a blingy color match pair that looks very coordinated together. Worst part is .. I don't really like RGB bling to start with (WTF, WT?!?) and my case is tucked away in a hutch and all you ever see is the front of the case peeking out of the door.
