Which All In Wonder?

Hi,

I also posted this in the video boards.

I don't do much gaming so an older card might be the OK with me. Right now I have a GF2MX and it would handle all the gamming I need to do. I also have a Hauppage Win TV GO card. The thing is the Hauppage card has crappy drivers and for XP it doesn't have any real software to capture video. They say they are working on it, but I have used this tv card for a couple years and I think I want something different.

What is the difference between the original AIW Radeon and the AIW Radeon 7500 as far as tv and capturing video is concerned? The AIW 8500 is way out of my price range. I read that the 7500 comes with a remote, but I don't really need that.

I just want something that is stable and does what it is advertised as. I also have "Video Studio" and was wondering if I could use it with the Radeon card?

I have been wanting an AIW for a long time, and I am thinking now might be the time to get one, but I am unsure as to what might be the one to get. I am a college student and am on a tight budget as it is, but I want something that is not a lot of hassell. So far I have about 5 different drivers downloaded for the WinTV card. 🙁

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You
Will

AFAIK the only differance between the original AIW radeon and hte new 7500 AIW is the remote and the fact that the 7500 is clocked slight faster, but if you don't need it for gaming then that doesn't matter much

I have an AIW Radeon and my experience has been generally positive. But, never install official ATI drivers. For some reason, they always break something with the AIW series with those official releases. And websites (AnandTech included <hint><hint>) never do good reviews of the video capture aspects of the AIW Radeon, so new users generally find themselves in trouble with many problems when they install the AIW.

If you're going to use Windows XP, there are two driver sets which work well. The version 3286 drivers that came on the AIW Radeon 8500DV installation CD work very well. There are other versions of the 3286 drivers that don't have the proper AIW Radeon support and things don't work right with them - i.e. the video quality is poor, the reception is horrible and channel 20 doesn't work. I have been using the 6018 drivers from www.rage3d.com lately. They seem to be alright as well. And as far as software, MMC 7.5 delivered with the Radeon 8500DV is the best choice if you want to use ATI's software. Older versions of MMC don't work well as well and I would avoid them at all cost.

Whenever I update my drivers, I go through a long process of removing all traces of the current ATI drivers from my file system and registy, and then installing the new drivers. Otherwise, I run into problems.

If I've scared you, don't worry. The product works well when you have it working. Getting it working is not difficult, but is delicate. If you don't know what you're doing, you can end up in trouble.

On a side note, another advantage to the AIW Radeon 7500 is TV-output is 1024x768 instead of 800x600 with the standard AIW Radeon - but you might want to confirm this because I only heard it from one source. My AIW Radeon is noticeably faster than the GeForce 2 MX I had in my system for 3d games. So it would probably be good enough for you in that respect.
