Qualifiers:
Trying to keep the price low (that's a shock)
The PCB must be black (good color)
Not Foxconn (don't trust them at all)

Primarily, I'm looking at the XFX (not the XXX edition) and the BFG. Thoughts on which might be better? Or is it six of one, half dozen of the other?

Yes... you forgot to mention that overclocking & swapping out the factory HS/fan are both allowed under their warranty.

:D

The black pcb is hit or miss these days. From what I've seen, some get black pcb and others get green pcb.

I like the ones with lifetime warranties myself. These cards are just to expensive to buy, have an issue with and not have really great support.

If it were a <$400 I might change my mind!

I have the XFX 8800GTX. It absolutely rocks! The PCB is black. XFX has the best warranty. It's a Double Lifetime warranty. So, you and it's next owner are both covered under the lifetime warranty.

The reports from XFX owners needing to do an RMA are very mixed & if you burn up your XFX overclocking or modify it in any way your warranty is void (transferable warranty should help a bit when selling though) the only company which allows both these things without issue is EVGA, plus they also offer advance-RMA for a small additional fee which gets you a replacement card overnight.

EVGA ACS3 KO if you can afford it.

If not

Leadtek 8800GTX for $550 AR

Because of leadtek's quality and the cooler looks more efficent.

"transformers.. robots in the sky..~~"

The Leadtek has an Nvidia reference cooler ... the only difference is the angled fins cut into the shroud.

Theres a few difference. The only reason i said it was efficent is because its a living transformer! its a decepticon!

I have an EVGA GTS, I would not recommend an EVGA GTX though. Current GTX owners can't take advantage of the step up due to EVGA's restrictions. Don't get lured into buying EVGA just because of the step up and read all their Ts&Cs carefully before making a decision. I'll try XFX next time.

I also have the EVGA GTX & the only "gotcha" with the step-up program in this case is that you can't use it to swap for the KO edition, which is no big deal because mine overclocks to the same levels anyway & doing so has no effect on the warranty

eVGA also has the best stock cooler.

Aren't they all the same?

No look up the article from AT when comparing the various 8800GTXs. The eVGA seems to have the best cooler, and seem to have gotten away with a bit of modification.
