Wow, I blinked my eyes for a couple of months, and now I don't know anything.

There are so many chipsets out and I really don't have time to do all the research.....but I know there are enough hardcore geeks here that someone can give me a rundown on the differences between the following chipsets:

Intel 845GE
Intel 845PE
Intel 845E
Intel 845G
Intel 845GL

Please help!

Assuming you don't need integrated graphics (i.e. onboard VGA), I'd definitely go with a motherboard based on 845PE. There's also E7205 (aka Granite Bay), but those really aren't worth the extra cash unless you're an overclocker in the extreme.

Btw, there are minor cold boot issues with 845PE boards only if you're an extreme overclocker, but of course that's to be expected with any type of overclocking.

I've been using the original i845 DDR chipset (i845D) for a year now in the form of an ASUS P4B266 mobo, and it's been a very good board. Very stable, no issues. Of course, it doesn't support the Intel Northwood "B" processors with 533Mhz FSB, and it only supports PC2100 DDR memory, so it's a little old for your purposes. I just wanted to say it's a really good board as this week is its one-year anniversary of being in my P4 2.0A system. Half-way to upgrade time!
