I have a friend who bought a mod chip & wants to add a bigger drive.I was going to recommend the Seagate Barracuda for it's low noise but I hear they can get pretty warm.

Should he be looking at the 5400 rpm drives only?

I would put a 5400rpm drive in as heat may be an issue with the placement of the drive(It's right above the CPU I believe). I heard that Xbox's use either WD or Seagate drives by default.

I would recommend going with a 5400rpm drive. It's cheaper, cooler, and still faster than the dvd drive for playing games. I just hope he has a good internet connection because xbox games are a pain to download. Unless of course he is renting and ripping in which case I hope he knows how to hex edit. As for which manufacturer to go with, it really doesn't matter. They will all perform about the same since it really isn't used much during game play.

Your right,I forgot but thats the purpose of the mod chip is to be able to play right off the hard drive,so even a 5400 rpm drive is still going to be faster than the DVD drive.

So I'm leaning towards the Seagate does anyone know if the 5400 rpm drives use the fluid bearings as well?

Thanks Toro

I believe 137GB is the max size the Xbox will recognize (or was that Tivo?). Either way, I have read of people using 120GB drives. Opt for 5400 RPM if possible as it really isn't that big a deal performance wise and temperatures are normally cooler on 5400RPM drives.

Crap, I was hoping it would take one of the Maxtor 160gig drives, but probably not.
What comes standard in it, 10gig or 8gig?

5400rpm drive definitly, don't want it getting too warm in there. And you'd probably be better off with a drive similar to what's in there now.(same manufacturer).
