Morning all,

In recent searches I was about to buy a Gigabyte 7970 1000mhz oc edition but upon some research found out the new revisions of these cards are voltage locked. Also seems that the Vapor X line of 7970's are supposedly voltage locked and the xfx 7970 v3.1 is also.

Besides the Asus Matrix and the MSI lightning, does anyone happen to know which make and model 7970's are not voltage locked?

the Sapphire HD 7970 Ghz Vapor-x is not voltage locked. i have heard about the recent batches of Gigabyte HD 7970 OC cards being voltage locked. the Sapphire HD 7970 OC with dual x cooler is not voltage locked.

Why on earth are Gigabyte voltage locking the more recent 7970 Windforce cards? People will just buy 7970's that do overvolt instead.

A great cooler like that, and they do this... :colbert:

Assuming they are locking voltage I would recommend anyone who has one and wants to ^volt it to get a hold of an older bios and flash it on the 2nd bios. I'm sure there would be owners out there who would save out their bios and send it to someone if they need it. Or even a place like TechPowerUp might have it in their bios database.

I was looking to buy either a 7950 Windforce or 7970 Windforce, I think the 7950's are still okay, but the 7970 I saw was only £30 more in cost at Scan UK.

I had a look on the Gigabyte website and the BIOS on there is listing F2 BIOS only, on Techpowerup I noticed they have an F1 listed, as well as the F2. Also a couple of BIOS for a lower clocked 925MHz version...

I've emailed Gigabyte asking why the decision to voltage lock the latest cards, I'm guessing they are saving money somewhere along the lines, I'll report back when they write back.

Probably voltage locking due to a high amount of RMAs. I know MSI doesn't voltage lock their cards.
