Which 7950 would you get

You would need around 1100/1500 to match a 670 out of the box.

I don't feel the need to discuss this further, the person in question isn't overclocking and I stand by what I said, for $34 more the 670 is a better card out of the box.

even if the 670 is a *tiny* bit faster at stock, it has crappy 2 GB VRAM and lower bandwidth so it's nowhere near as future-proof. Even the stock 800 MHz 7950's will be faster than the 670's in a years time.
 
And the 7950s performance isn't future proofed either.

670 is fast enough at stock it takes a decent OC for the 7950 to match it, and it's fast enough overclocked that you need a good 7950 to match it as well.

AMD has a slower memory controller, reading bandwidth off gpuz doesn't make you an expert, neither do outrageous claims.
 
@Balla You're right I didn't see the date on it. I thought the Boost X2 version of that card was fairly new as I only recently saw it for sale here in Canada. My bad.
 
I appreciate the counsel AND "repartee" but I won't pay an additional $45 for the 670 when the 7950s can be had for $310 or less. I have been all over the map with this purchase. From a cheap Sapphire to EVGA, XFX, and more.

My initial consideration was cost, followed by dependability, then sound, and warranty...or something in that order.

We have had great success with most of our cards and the only one that crashed was an XFX that they replaced with a 6850!!

Again. Thank you. Hopefully tonight I decide between the two or something else (a better deal) pops up...then it's all over again.

Heh, good luck. I don't think you can go wrong with either selection. Both the TF3 and WF3 7950's are good cards, the WF3 is probably better out of the box because of it's slightly better warranty and cooler, while the TF3 could end up being a better choice if your kid ever ends up typing "Overclocking" into his search bar!
 
If you value quiet, I would try the Gigabyte. My friend has a TF3, and despite its remarkable 91% ASIC quality it runs loud and hot.
 
Now im torn, can anyone help me choose? Im not truly for over-clocking but i need that option available or does the performance really not matter?

You're torn! I am still hoping Amazon will drop their prices to at least match Newegg or the others who sell their cards cheaper with rebates but will most likely order the MSI....

Yea when i say im torn is because they have so many different variations or manufactures that i need to know which brand is the better of them. Also a brannd like msi has 3 different variations.

corrected. the HD 7950 is on avg 5% ( 3 - 7% based on game) slower than HD 7970 at the same clocks. a 50 - 75 Mhz higher clock is what is needed to match a HD 7970. HD 7950 at 1100 -1125 mhz matches a HD 7970 Ghz. you can see

zettler if you can fit a HIS HD 7950 iceq x2 in the cabinet its the best HD 7950 card. the card is 311 mm long. reference HD 7970 PCB with 8 + 6 pin power. more power phases than reference HD 7950 PCB. unlocked voltage. excellent cooler. at USD 330 its the best built HD 7950.

if you want a shorter card go for Sapphire HD 7950 boost (290 mm) or MSI HD 7950 TF3 OC BE (262 mm). HIS, Sapphire , MSI cards have unlocked voltage.

The latest reviews for GTX 780 have clearly shown the HD 7970 Ghz as around 5 - 10% faster than GTX 680. That puts a GTX 680 boosting to mostly 1.1 Ghz slightly behind a 1.1 Ghz HD 7950.

Balla, dont you have a barely used TF3 in the for sale thread? that would be the 7950 to get if you wanted a good deal.
 
Pulled the trigger as his birthday is the 30th. Got the MSI and hope he can type over-clocking...

not saying that because i own one like most TF3 owners 😉

HIS has been THE BEST cards around for a long time....

and you'll kick urself in the balls later if u choose the latter for sure 😉
