Which 7900GT overclocks nicely

I'm thinking of buying a 7900GT with the intention of doin the voltmod, cooling it with a VF1, and overclocking it as far as I can.

My question is - are all 7900GT's created equal in this respect, or should I be careful picking out which one to buy?

Does factory overclocking have any impact on my voltmodding/overclocking?

For example, the cheapest one on NewEgg is
eVGA 256-P2-N584-AR, factory oc'd to 500MHz. Will it make a good test subject?

Which cards did the overclockers here use? What should I look for in a card?

Thanks!

eVGA all the way. That KO version is already overclocked 50MHz. You can overclock it some more but only up to a certain amount before you hit the ceiling. A plain 7900GT will overclock alot but you are starting out at the stock clock speed which is 450MHz. The KO version probably has a better cooling system then the stock versions though and that makes a big difference. eVGA also warranties the card if overclocking so thats a huge plus. Not sure if volt modding is covered though. I would guess no but you'd have to check on that. I think when it comes to volt modding the 7900GT most people use the stock version of the 7900GT and save the cash. Most volt modding I have seen was with the 7900GT stock card anyway. Whichever card you choose and method definetly stick with the eVGA.

as a general rule of thumb, factory overclocked 7900gt's are more prone to mishaps and bad cards. If you're going to oc yourself, jsut get the stock spec'd 430/1380mhz 7900gt. That being said, get the cheapest evga or leadtech card. Both oc better than others. With a vmod, a 7900gtx could be in your future... :D

Like mine. 7900GT's @ 690/1700. I had them at 700/1620 but I found that I could get up to 1700 on the ram (stock voltage) and 690 was more stable on the core (1.45v)

It really doesn't matter which company you go with. I'd go with Evga because of their warrenty, service, etc.

If you go to the eVGA website and click on their product link you'll see all their different versions of the 7900. It'll show all the specs and everything. It may help you decide. The more I think about it I think if you are going to do the volt mod it would probably be best to get the plain jane stock version of the eVGA 7900GT.
