Which 7850?

I just got this HIS (but the Turbo version factory-overclocked at 1000MHz core) and I love it so far. Skyrim is fast enough with the high-res textures that I feel no need to overclock it past the factory 1000MHz at the moment. There are reviews and I posted my impressions and some pics in the thread below.

Cool, how much of a shroud does that card have? Do you know if it dumps a lot of heat into the case? I'm running an OEM system with a single intake fan :'(
 
The shroud is open a bit at the top but like I said, my case doesn't seem to heat up more during gaming than when I had my 4870. Still, at 33%, you feel the air coming out of the vent but not too much. That would vary if left on auto and I may still do this soon, at least to try it (fan goes down to 20% on auto while idle and is inaudible at that speed).

OK. I just played Skyrim for a bit with the fan on auto. Temp in Overdrive right after exiting the game was 43C. I don't like auto because I could hear the fan a bit during the quiet moments in the game, particularly when it changed pitch. I'm back to user-defined 33% constant speed.

I just pushed the fan up to 80% and placed my hand near the vent and you don't feel much air coming out (only comparison I can make is with the blower on my Diamond 4870 and there's definitely less airflow out the HIS 7850 vent). However, the air that does come out feels barely above room temperature so the card does run cool (at least at idle).

I want to make sure you understand those are my personal impressions. Someone else might feel differently. But I do own the card and have no regret buying it so far.

Also my card is factory overclocked to 1000MHz. Yours is at 860. Since you have an OEM case with just one fan, you probably will prefer to remain at 860 and the card should run cooler at that core speed than at 1000 even if the voltage is the same.

Even when I had a mid-tower, I never noticed a change in temps on the CPU or components when went with a blower fan that exhausted all of the card's heat vs. a fan in the middle card that exhausted 50% of the heat and pushed 50% in to the case.

I would buy the HIS because it looks like it has a much larger fan, which to me says quieter and less pitch change while gaming. Even with a smaller case, as long as you have decent enough airflow, you should be ok.
 
Of the 2, definitely the HIS. The PowerColor has a pretty weak cooler. I'd also consider the Sapphire 7850 OC. It's a bit shorter than the HIS (Sapphire's site says 207mm (~8") compared to 9.25" for the HIS) 920MHz factory clock.
 
I'll say it again, only video card that ever failed on me was an ATI x850 "evil commando" from power color. It lasted about 16 months.
 
I have the ASUS DCII and i'm really happy with it. It's practically silent and never goes above 60c but the cooler is quite large and overhangs the card by a fair way so it might not be a good choice for a small case.

Out of those 2 I would take the HIS.
 
the HIS Iceq has one of the best coolers. the powercolor card which you mentioned has a ref cooler that sucks. You could also consider the sapphire HD 7850 with dual x cooler. very efficient cooling.

HIS Iceq or Sapphire Dual X . take your pick.
 
I have that specific HIS, and it is very quiet. Even better, it barely produces any heat.Haven't done any overclocking yet, but for how cool and quiet it is, it should do good.
