which 64 bit operating system to get?

Windows 7 for sure.

And yes, you should have to reinstall all your games if you switch operating systems. (You should do a clean install).

Yep, Windows 7 hands down. Its 64-bit version has mainstream support and well as all the other benefits that Windows 7 has over XP. XP 64 bit was an odd duck and driver support is a crapshoot. I bought and used XP 64 bit a few years ago and frankly it was a waste of $$$.

Either way you'll need a clean install.

XP itself is 9 years old and virtually EOL now and the 64-bit release was pretty much just a proof of concept and had no real support from MS or 3rd parties. Choosing any build of XP these days would be doing yourself a disservice.

If you switch from Win XP x32 to Win XP x64 you will have to Re-install ever thing as well.

windows 7 or xp?

Windows 7, xp is reaching end of life.

am i going to have to reinstall all my games and whatnot?

Are your games on steam?

When I installed windows 7 - 64, all I had to do was re-install steam and just about all of my games worked. I had to run setup on a couple of games like borderlands, and a modified version of quake II, but just about everything else worked.

Windows 7 no question. Even if you needed to go with Win XP I wouldn't run the x64 version. It is buggy, and driver support is shaky as best.
