Which 5900 is right for me?

I want to be right next to the bleeding edge gaming quality/perfomance.. And I want to spend ~$200. I was told that mid to low end 5900's overclock to the performance of a 5900 Ultra without any additional cooling and what not. This is fine in theory, but there are 100's of Geforce makes out there and also the types(Ultra, N/U, SE, XT).

My question is, which vendor and model should I buy with overclocking in mind and staying at or under $200. It will be used on an NF7-S, mobile barton OC'd, and good PC3200 DDR.

See my sig. The 5900 in my machine is a Gainward. You can go budget or high end with Gainward and still have a good overclocker either way.

Leadtek 5900 or XT. They perform similar. Other great companies, BFG, MSI, Gainward, Asus, eVGA. I choose companies without bundles though.

no you cannot! I would suggest the evga 5900, not SE for 217 at newegg. Well built and oc well.

The XTs are weird. I don't think they are as overclockable, but the regular 5900 are supposed to be able to do that. Although, they are harder to find because they stopped production. But I would give it a shot.

Please do not get a refurbished video card, you are just asking for trouble. Look at the pics of that evga, now thats cooling. If you cant afford 18 more bucks then dont get anything now(speaking of FX line).

I would put out the 19 bucks for a non-refurbished one. I've heard people with problems. It's probably better, just as a safety.

You should also consider this card. Cheaper than the 1st. A 9800 Pro. At default it is much faster than the 5900, and although it doesn't overclock as high, it's overclocked perfromance should still be a force to be reckoned with.

Yeah I just realized it was a refurb after I posted. Think I will go with an MSI that is $219.

I want to go nVidia, detonators are the best drivers made for any hardware, imo.

All the MSI products that my friends or family have are cheap junk. They have given them so much trouble it is worth the extra 10$ for a better brand.

I have my Geforce Ti4600 underclocked a little bit due to graphics freeze ups(Playing Max Payne 2, it looked like it would lock up, but the sounds and stuff would keep going.. 10 seconds later the vid would catch up) Taking it down about 20mhz stopped that.. I got paranoid because I had a friend whose Ti4200's fan went dead and fried it :/

I am not too worried which brand Geforce 5900 I get, as long as there are no glaring problems with one or another. I also have to keep in mind I won't be buying for another couple months, and prices may go down.. and I also have noticed that a lot of the 5900 N/U are going bye-bye and just leaving Ultra's and XT's.
