Which ~500GB hard drives?

I need a ~500GB internal drive for dropping into an older machine. Don't need anything especially fast or fancy, just a beefy drive to back up DVDs. Since it's an older computer, SATA is not really an option. Is this the only option? Hitachi Deskstar 7K500 500GB

Also need a ~400-500GB external. I was looking at this Seagate 400GB. The only 500GB externals I've seen are from LaCie, which I hadn't heard of before now. Any comments on their reliability?

Any thoughts on these choices for storage? I realize 500GB is around the upper limit for commonly available drives, but I still would really like to avoid multiple drives if possible.

WD also has a 400GB solution as well.

IMHO, I would avoid Hitachi DeathStars like the plague, but I haven't used one for about 2 years.

If you can wait then Seagate will have a 4 platter 500GB HDD available soon. However as of right now the Hitachi is the only 500GB HDD (5 platters)

Seagate currently has a 400GB HDD as well.

You can also get a PCI SATA controller card. That way you don't have to limit yourself to PATA options only.

Seagate's 7200.9 series is coming out, and it should include a 500GB drive. If you can wait a little bit :)

Lacie is not a storage manufacturer they buy maxtor drives and package them into crowded pot metal cases with poor ventilation.
