So, I have narrowed down my search for a new 1440 27" gaming monitor (Which doubles as one of my work monitors). If somebody has some other suggestion, that would be great too.

My requirements for this search were:
  • 27"
  • 1440P
  • FreeSync (I have AMD Cards in gaming and work machines)
  • Not TN
So, here are two I am thinking of. One is flat and IPS, the other is curved and VA. I have never owned a VA panel, plenty of IPS and TN displays. I have owned many ViewSonic displays, but never an LG. From what I have read VA has much better blacks than IPS, but the view angles are not quite as good, although they are better than TN. LTT had a great review of the LG, but they have not reviewed the ViewSonic. Oh, the LG has the nVidia sticker on it, but its an A-Sync display.

Anybody used either of these, or have any input?

VA will have better contrast ratio for media viewing, IPS will have less smearing and blurring during fast movement.

Though do note, the new LG gaming IPS panels have pretty poor contrast ratio, around 700-800 to 1 instead of the VA panel at around 2500-3000:1 (though reviews aren't out for it yet with proper measurements, VA panels are always better than IPS in this regard)

I was under the impression that IPS panels tend to have more bloom. VA's are known for really dark blacks?
I assume he's confused and referring to smearing/ghosting or pixel overshoot which are common problems with VA panels.
As yes, generally bloom/glow is a well-known issue with IPS panels.

Or he COULD be thinking of FALD VA panels (like with some TVs or higher-end monitors) which causes pretty bad haloing on bright objects, but that also happens on IPS panels with FALD.

I was indeed talking about FALD VA panels. Imo, they are much worse than ips panels. I haven’t seen any 2020 models yet though.

Unfortunately, I cannot find any info on if the ViewSonic is a FALD or not. It has HDR support, so its quite possible it is. But being that I am coming from a junky TN display on my gaming machine, I don't think this issue would bother me. From the few video reviews I have seen (its new enough that there just aren't many yet) the display does pretty well when it comes to ghosting.

The LG on the other hand gets glowing reviews from everywhere. It just lacks that good contrast ratio with deep blacks.

well the picture i posted was an example of an IPS FALD panel, so it's pretty bad no matter which you go with.

My current monitor is ips, and that light bleed can reduced. I was playing with a VA panel in micro center last Xmas, and no matter what I did I couldn’t get it to a level that I could live with. It was a ultra wide, so maybe that’s why.

Yeah ultrawides have poor panel uniformity and quality control as it is. Especially the highest specced ones.

I wouldn't touch current FALD with a 10 foot pole. But most monitors currently don't use FALD due to the cost and obvious downside of horrible haloing around bright objects.

So I decided to go for the ViewSonic, and it arrived yesterday. I got it for about $125 less than the LG.

Thus far, it seems nice. Certainly the best monitor I have ever owned. The depth of color blows my old TN display out of the water. The curve is actually perfect, and feels like every display (of this size) should be like this.

There is a strange ghosting effect which no reviews mentioned where if you have white text on a black back ground, and you move the window or scroll, the text changes from white to a sort of red while it is moving. I have an IPS display next to this which will also have the text blur when scrolling or moving the window in the same use case, but the text stays white.

I will have to mess with some of the features to see if any reduce it. It has a LOT of configurations.

EDIT: I changed the display mode to FPS in the build in profiles and the red shift is now gone. There is a bit of text blur, but it doesn't change color, which is what was really annoying me.
