I am thinking about buying a 22" monitor but I need to know which is mainly best for Xbox 360 as thats the main reason I am getting one. I don't have a 360 yet but plan on getting one in the next couple months.

If you want to output your 360 at 1:1 you might want to look at the 24" panels. Not sure if any of the 22" can do 1:1 mapping, but I guess you could do 1:1 @ 720p. The 24" panels are about 2x as much but worth it imo if you want to get all the 1080 goodness out of your Xbox360.

For the price of a 24" I'd probably just get me a budget 32" LCD TV. Looking to spend no more than about $350.

Can check out the 22" Samsung 226BW then. It seems to be getting a lot of buzz in the 22" category. Still a TN panel but doesn't seem to have as much of a problem with viewing angles as the Dell E228WFP I tried for a few days. The Chi Mei, Sceptre, Acer are all probably similar to the Dell. The 226BW is on sale now at Circuit City for $380 and seems to be the only place that has them stocked.

Not sure how Xbox360 looks on it or what resolution it outputs. Might want to check out Hardforums 226BW thread as I'm sure there's people there who have tried it, maybe even posted pics.

Agreed!

Get a 19" 5:4 until Microsoft releases a dashboard upgrade supporting 1650 x 1050. I looks better on my 17" Philips then my 22" Viewsonic.

Anyone played an xbox 360 on a Samsung 225wb? When I set my 225wb to the 720p resolution in Windows or in other games it looks really terrible. I'm getting a 360 in the next couple weeks and I'm planning on hooking it up to my 225wb with the VGA port.

Should I be expecting a different image quality with that setup than what I am seeing using similar desktop/game settings now?

Please dont get a 22" or any 1680x1050 monitor for an xbox360!

Even if you're using the VGA cable (which you should be) the xbox wont output 1680x1050. You're going to be stuck with a stretched 1366x768 picture.

A 22" TN panel wouldnt even be able to do 1:1 pixel mapping so you couldnt do anything about the screen stretch.

Take my word for this, I know.

Yeah I'm aware that my LCD's native resolution doesn't match up with xbox 360's output options... but I've heard some displays do the conversion a lot better than others. I'll probably play 75+% of the time on my HDTV, but if my wife wants to watch a couple hours of her own shows I like the flexibility of using my PC's LCD via VGA.

1366 x 768 is the 360's output eh? I was thinking it would be 1280x720... Or do you mean my LCD will take the 1280x720 720p output and convert it to 1366 x 768?

1366x768 is the closest resolution to 1680x1050 as the xbox will output. You can however pick a different resolution below 1366x768, but I dont know why you would want to.

I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say some LCDs do the conversion better?

If you mean some scale better than others I would say you're right. But I dont think you're going to get a good picture from a 22" TN panel when the image is getting stretched. With any 22" TN LCD, you're not going to be able to enable 1:1 pixel mapping which is the only way you're not going to get a stretched image.

It is my understanding that some LCD's do a better job of producing non-native resolutions. I have tried my Samsung 225wb at all possible resolutions in games and in windows just to get a feel for how bad it is... it's not great lol. So I was just wondering if VGA output from an XBox should have the same quality issues or if there is a chance it could look better or worse. I guess with bad VGA cables it could look even worse.

I'm trying to hold off for the next gen 360... which may or may not actually exist. If this thread hasn't dropped off the planet by the time I get around to buying one I'll post my results.

I use 1280x1024 widescreen on my Dell 2007WFP and it outputs a really good picture. My main gripe is the flickering and snow effect on gray colours, this is a fault of the 2007WFP and not the 360 or VGA cable.

As previously stated; some monitors scale better than others.

You might want to consider this one Sceptre x22wg-Gamer (VGA-DVI-HDMI)

Notable features include:

A) 1:1 Pixel Mapping (Yes I know its a TN but it does 1:1, you can verify it here in this rather long thread Hard|forum)

B) HDCP support on both HDMI & DVI ports.

C) Accepts 1080i/1080p inputs through HDMI (Though of course they non-native but there are some Grand Turismo HD (PS3 through HDMI) screenshots in the link I gave above and it looks great.

D) 2 USB and audio ports.

I'm getting one pretty soon, should be great.

I agree. The Sceptre might not be ideal, but it's the only one I know of that fits your specs You may need to pick up a replacement DVI cable, I've heard of a few quality control issues.
