OK, ive been looking at 21" (20" viewable) flatscreen (trinitron or whatever) CRTs

I know these things are awefully expensive, but I'm willing to go without food for a few weeks to pay for it ;)

anyhow, ive been looking at like 3 Sony models mostly. Haven't really seen anything else. If I should be looking at a diff brand, by all means do tell me.

Link to Sony 21" CRTs

The $1700 is out of the question, the 2 $800 are considerable, but still not sure if those are worth the money. Lastly, the $600 looks pretty nice.

Quick question: I can't seem to find the difference between the 2 $800 models (the CPD-G520 and CPD-G520P) wtf is with that? anyone know?

so, those are the sony ones im looking at. I'm still open to ANYTHING that would be worth it. I'm looking for image quality of course. Capability for high refresh rates is always nice too.

Thanks ahead of time :)

I believe the 520P has higher refresh rates than 520. It's a newer revision of the "old" 520, so it probably has other minor changes as well. I was looking for the 520P the other day and found it for $685 at Newegg.

Anyone know if the Samsung 1200NF ("22 inch" 20.0 viewable) monitor would be better than the Sony ones?

IMHO Samsung delivers a better monitor per dollar (i.e. better value). I own the 900NF, and it's a great monitor with first-rate specs. However, mine is due for RMA (some slight visual problems that developed after a while). I've been too lazy to take care of it.

In the past, Samsung may have been associated with budget electronics, but they are now the world's largest monitor manufacturer. The 900NF has won quite a few awards AFAIK. Sure, the GDM-520P (or something) has eye-popping specs (0.22" dot pitch) but as you noted it's $1700.

For around the same price range (sub-$700) you'll probably pay a bit less for the 1200NF and get more than any comparable high-end Sony (obviously you can get lower-end 21" AG CRT monitors for less than the 1200NF costs). The major complaint I've seen w/ the Samsung NF series is the monitors are bulky; this is a common property of AG CRTs though.

Finally, I do have a bias against Sony consumer electronics products (very bad luck with them). So I avoid buying Sony anyway, but in this case I believe Samsung delivers a better product/value anyway.

Sony hands down. I've owned many 21" Monitors from Mitsu to IIyama. Nothing beats a Sony IMHO.

I personally love my Nokia multigraph 445xpro 21" (20" viewable) It goes up to 1800x1440 @ 75hz and has a built in 4 port USB hub in the back. The only problem is that it is not flat, it uses a invar shadow mask CRT which means it does not have those two horizontal "lines" across the screen like AG monitors, but it does have a slight curve to it. I got it for $360, but now I can't find them for less than $550.

My roomate has the regular 445pro (not the "x" version like mine) This uses the FG Trinitron tube and is completely flat. it only has something like a 19.6" viewable, but it is still plent big. His max res is slightly higher than 1600x1200 but I am not sure what it is exactly. He bought his through dell for something like $400 and he absolutly loves it (we both have dual 21" and 17" monitor setups)

I am not saying anything bad about the sony's, merely that I do not have any experience with them. The nokia's we have (nokia monitors are now produced by viewsonic) have been wonderful and are semi-cheap.

My favorite monitor is the Sony GDM-F520 but you have ruled that one out. The closest monitor I have used that compares to the F520 is the NEC FP1375X. It has an incredible picture and allows a dvi connection.
