Which 20" monitor between these two?

What you would suggest between these two as far as a monitor for gaming goes (but not for movies)? Things that are most important are vivid colors, deep black levels, and good response time. I'm also open to other options for monitors if anyone has suggestions.

Thanks for the input. I just noticed though that the Viewsonic was discontinued and it looks like it was replaced with the 2035wm. And upon looking at Viewsonic's site, there's the 22" 2235wm also. So I'm wondering if the 20" NEC is still better in terms of the things I mentioned above or if the 2235wm is better.

I've actually been able to compare the VX2025WM, 2007WFP, and 20WMGX2 all at the same time and found that the 20WMGX2 was the best monitor to have if you want the best picture.

The ViewSonic was good and much cheaper, but it also had / has some lurking DVI port issues that I just didn't want to mess with. One really nice thing about it is that it is that its panel hardly ever gets dead pixels. After I couldn't find any xtknight filled me in on that little detail. Its picture was pretty solid compared to the other two, but it didn't have a uniform background and had some evident backlight bleeding in the corners - making the black-levels kinda pointless and dark games like FEAR or Q4 not so fun to play.

The Dell had the best bezel / stand out of all of them. If you want your monitor to look pretty good and bend and move in a variety of ways the 2007WFP would be the one for you. That and it has more connectivity than either the VX2025WM or the 20WMGX2. I believe it supports some scaling through the OSD, but I never messed with that when I had them. It had great uniformity with no backlight bleeding, the picture had good colors and the price tag was good. If you're just not sure about the NEC, the 2007WFP would be my second choice.

The NEC has the best picture quality of any LCD I've ever seen. Period. Deep blacklevels, uniform backlight, and a color contrast ratio that stomps the Dell or ViewSonic. It's gives, I think, the best speed per image quality ratio out of the LCD's (Samsung makes a good one that actually has better colors but is slower). The bezel is alright, I'm not a fan of gray but when the picture looks as good as this I don't care. Also the stand is fixed only allows you to tilt the panel forward or backward, so if you want to have a little bit more flexibility the NEC isn't the best choice. It also sports an "Opticlear" coating that either makes or breaks it for some. I do A LOT of my computer stuff in a completely dark room with a keyboard with lighted keys, so a reflective Opticlear coating doesn't bother me as there is no light. Yet my brother hates this monitor simply because of the coating. He doesn't have a lighted keyboard and likes to play with a light on in his room and the coating on this monitor really does give a mirror reflection when there's enough light. It has less conectivity than the Dell and doesn't support scaling in the OSD.

Hope this helps.

both are excellent monitors for their price range.. viewsonic is one of the best bang for the buck monitors.. does everything @ 9/10 quality while the nec does everything nearly perfect.

I think those two are actually inferior to the VX2025 and use TN panels of some sort.

As Josh said, the 20WMGX2 is probably overall the best LCD available. Its only real downside is the price, although I think the coating alone makes it worth the premium over the others (that's the main thing that provides the deep blacks).

Do you have the IPS version of the 2007? It seems that most of the units shipping now are the PVA ones that are quite inferior to the IPS models, so the 2007 isn't as good a choice as it used to be.

I've seen the VX2025 and while it looks good for the price, the DVI port problem is supposedly very widespread, meaning you most likely would have to use VGA, which is a definate reason to stay away from it....

The only reason I'm wary of the 20WMGX2 is because of this review on Tom's Hardware, which mentions the brightness isn't completely uniform across the screen.

There two different price points. Totally different.

VX2025wm is great bang for the buck. Has a P-MVA panel (good, better then TN but not as good as the S-IPS in the NEC) so thats why it's such a great monitor at it's price point.
It has a good panel in it.

The NEC is way more expensive. And the price is worth it. It's superior to the Viewsonic.

That varies widely per unit. My 20WMGX2 is the most uniform screen I've used (and it is indeed very uniform...I see no bleeding anywhere). You'll definitely get more bleeding with the VX2025WM (ViewSonic is notorious for it, and they may send hand-picked models to reviewers with little bleeding). The bleeding on my VP930b is atrocious in comparison to any other LCD in the house.

quick question: How does the Dell 2007WFP compare to the Viewsonic vx2025 and NEC 20WMGX2? I'm considering it as an alternative between the cheap-yet-buggy viewsonic and the very expensive NEC monitors...

well in my opinion, dell is basically a roll of the dice. they are starting to do something called 'panel lottery' which basically means you wont know which lcd panel you get when you order. only way to find out is to buy one, and test it out yourself to see which one you got.
at first i think dell was using s-ips panels, but now its mixed in pva panels (i think)

Wow, that isn't cool. I don't like any kind of lotto when we're dealing with expensive hardware... I'm actually surprised that they can advertise a screen that has such variable specs, depending on what panel you get... Hopefully I can afford the NEC when I get my comp...

Ah, good point. Thanks for adding that. Mine was the IPS panel.

i really dont know how they can justify it. its like buying a farrari and not knowing which engine you might get.

dell has also started to obscure the panel information and coding. which makes it harder for people to figure out (except by visual inspection) exactly which one they got.
problem being talked about
