Hi all. Ive been away from comps, on the hardware side, for awhile and Im looking to purchase 1 of these 2 cards. I wanted to get some opinions on which one was the better buy from a performance & reliability standpoint, as price isnt really a factor between the 2 as you can see it's only $10. The card will be used mostly for gaming and I run everything in 800x600 mode. I would think that the GEF4 would be a better choice as it is newer technology, but that's why I am here, to find out. :) I have an Nvidia card now and it has never given me any trouble w\ any app, game, etc. I am going back w\ an Nvidia for sure. So if you could plz give me some opinions between these 2 cards I would appreciate it.
Thx to all who post!:)

Ok, here's the skinny. The GeForce 4s go into two categories, MX and Ti. Like previous cards, the Ti's are good and the MX's suck the fat one in the sky. The GeForce 4 MX's are just glorified GeForce 2s. The GeForce 3 has newer/better technology, and will easily outperform the GeForce 4 MX. For an example look here.

get an oem radeon 8500 for like $100. It will give you equal performance as the gf3 plus better tv out, dvi, and dual monitor support. It is by far the best budget card imo.

btw is you arnt familiar with websight Pricewatch.com , check it out. They list some of the lowest prices on the internet!

strictly between those 2?
the gf3. without a second thought.
worthy mention: radeon8500 64mb ddr.
will beat that gf3 ti200 or even the gf3ti500. best bang for buck.
imho, anyway.

If you have to pick another nVidia, the GF3 ti200 kicks the GF4MX any time, any place, any circumstance.... but if you want the best card for $100 get an Ati Radeon 8500. The best bang for the buck, no doubt. (Make sure to get the latest drivers)

:D Everybody is telling it like it is. GF3 cards ALL easily outperform ALL GF4MX cards and also offer DX8 hardware that GF4MX cards lack.

;) In the US & Canada Rad8500LE is a better card than the GF3TI200, even when o/c the GF3TI200 loses by a smidge. The Rad8500LE also has better '2D' Image Quality and VIVO, although the GF3 cards offer better AA. Neither GF3TI200 or Rad8500LE will disappoint and are bargains for $100.

:D For a little more the GF4TI4200 is one heck of a sweet card. Excellent '2D' Image Quality, better VIVO, better AA & Aniso and much better performance. The 4200-128MB is around $150, the 64MB will save you $20 or so if you are on a tighter budget. All GF4TI4200 beat the GF3TI500 and full blown ATI Radeon8500, and that's before they o/c (at which the excel reaching GF4TI4400 levels).

;) It does depend upon your CPU and requirements, but at $100 both the GF3TI200 and Rad8500LE are excellent cards both featuring full DX8 hw, FAR BETTER than the nasty deceivingly named GF4MX cards.

On that Tom's VGA chart, where would an old 3DFX 3000 AGP Fall? Isn't its performance near the TNT Ultra?

:( Even an old Voodoo4 (much faster than the older Voodoo3 3000 can't give GF2mx perf, in fact the GF2mx200 would probably still beat it. Of course '2D' image quality and AA is very good on 3dfx cards. The perf will get worse as games get newer and res and detail increase. The perf of a GF2mx is baout 33% faster than even a Voodoo4, you are really looking at GF2mx200 or original TNT perf.

Is that an original Geforce3 or is it a Geforce3 Ti....either way, like everyone says....it's gonna be a better performer than the MX440...and so it should be....nobody would expect the top of the line from one generation to be outperformend by the value end of the next generation.

But I think that the MX440 is slated a lot because people forget that it was never intended to be compared to the Ti range of cards. I changed from a GTS to an MX440 (for TV-Out) and was perfectly happy, gaming performence has been boosted marginally which is fine for me.

But because of price, the GF3 is definately better....does it have DVI + TV Out like the GF4MX?...either way thought at 800x600 the MX440 is going to be fast enough for any game so you won't notice 'much' difference.

Where does the V5 5500 lie then, would you say it's less of a performer that the original GF2 MX??...I think I remember seeing benchmarks that seemed the indicate it was up until higher res.

 It would seem the Voodoo5 is about the perf of GF2mx400 and the GF2gts ($50ish new BTW) is a good 40-50% faster plus has hw T&L and much better drivers too, of course the 3dfx card will certainly have better '2D' image quality and better AA, but even so it would seem that time has taken its toll on Voodoo5.
