I'm assuming that if i get PC3200 I will not hit around 260-270MHz, as I most definitely will with some of these. Timings are not extremely important to me seeing as I can only run at 2T Command Rate with my motherboard. My main concern is getting a whopping frequency overclock out of the kit I buy. What do you think?

edit: feel free to add other kits If I missed some other good ones

you will be able to run 1t command rate if you get 2 sticks. With 4 sticks you can't.

This is all a matter of opinion. I am a fan of OCZ myself.

Opterons really aren't very bandwidth hungry at all, so timings will be a bit more important. Even then, you'll only see like maybe a 5% improvement. I recommend saving some money and going with 2x1GB of value RAM.

my motherboard has a problem where it cannot run 1T after 245-255 HTT or so.. so most would recommend the expensive OCZ so far?

mushkin appears to be the same as OCZ, I'm going to look for some reviews

You could go with either the OCZ or Mushkin. Looks like they can both hit 250 (and a bit more) and stock timings. I guess it comes down to personal preference.

I would say its probally more down to luck that anything else, OCZ G.Skills and Mushkin all have similar binning processes and those moduals probally are using the same TCCD/TCC5 memory(gigaram included).

My preferance would be either G.Skills or OCZ

ideally I'd like to be able to have 2GB (1gbx2) running at 300MHz with somewhere around 3-4-4-8 timings, but I realize that will be tough, I'm just going to test my luck... but my chances will be severly limited if i dont get the OCZ or Mushkin.. so its basically narrowed down to those 2

You don't have to limit yourself in CPU speed. I hate it how people think your CPU overclock is limited by your RAM overclock. You can just run a memory divider, which will let you run your RAM at a different frequency than your HTT. Higher frequency makes almost no difference in performance on an Athlon 64 system anyways. Timings make a bit of a difference, but not much at all, and definitely not worth $50.

Well stated . . . spending that $ for maybe a 5% performace gain is foolish, but many here do so. Buy some name brand value ram.

My motherboard has 400, 333, 266 dividers.. right now my 333 setting makes my memory run at 245Mhz, with my CPU at 2.7GHz... If i set my memory divider to 400, then my frequency will increase to 300Mhz (aka DDR600).. now if I were to buy value ram, i'd probably be severly limited in clock speed to a divider of 266, see as value memory will not hit the current 245Mhz (333 divider) in most scenarios.. So I am definitely buying DDR500, and its gotta be a good overclocking brand with nice heat spreaders such as OCZ, or Mushkin using hynix modules.. I came here to see what you people would recommend most in my situation, because I would LOVE to use the 400 divider and be at 300Mhz with relaxed timings.. any suggestions besides OCZ, and Mushkin links? or just recommend one of the two?

when the $50 is 5% of what you're spending it isn't worth a 5% performance gain?

The only 2x1gb sticks that have a chance at reaching 300mhz at 3-4-4-8 are Crucial Ballistix. However, I doubt you'll be able to do that w/ your current motherboard(not enough memory tweaking settings).

FWIW - I have a brand new set of Crucial Ballistix for sale in the FS Forum

You both are spot on right!🙂

I built the system I'm on last spring, upgraded to a dual core, then upgraded video and just recently upgraded the ram from 1GB to 2GB. I also upgraded my other system to a dual core and decided to put the 1GB of ram from this system into that one (it only had 512). The 1GB was "value" ram with looser settings but when I ordered the new ram I ordered more expensive stuff with tight timings..........the difference IS noticable I don't care what is said by a lot of people around here. Boot is quicker, programs and menus are are quicker, and the boys say they could really tell the difference on this system.

I then decided to really test it, so I ordered 1GB or XMS 2-2-2-5 for the other system and replaced the value ram with it............same thing, the difference is VERY noticable on boot, menus, programs and games.

Many say there is only a 2% - 5% gain......if that is truley the case, that difference is a very noticable 2% - 5% because everyone noticed the difference on both systems!

Don't skimp on the ram...........🙂

Mushkin.

Great price for that DDR500, & i like mine, even if it doesn't OC worth crap 😛
