I've almost convinced myself to just buy a 19" vs. 20" as I really don't have the money to invest in a 20" coupled with the probable upgrade I'd need to operatee it like I could a 19". With that said, which do most of you think would be better? I'm reasonably sure the NEC will win, BUT, I don't know anything about the Hyundai brand. NEC (from all of the forums I've read) seems to have very good service as far as replacing defects. But how about Hyundai?? Or any of the other good 19" monitors.... I'm currently using a ASUS A8V Delux Board, with a Athlon 64 3200, and a Geforce 6800 GT 256MB video card (AGP). Todo justice to a 20" monitor I believe I need to update to dual PCI boards and probably a faster CPU. Any comments?

Neither are that great from the Tom's Hardware Guide review I read. You will be gaming with this, right? I'd aim for the ViewSonic VX922 or ViewSonic VP930b. The NEC is slower than competitors, and the Hyundai also is. The Hyundai L90D+ had serious vertical line dead pixel problems so I wouldn't buy Hyundai if I were you.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I'll be gaming mostly, flight sims is all. I'll also be doing some MS Office work, as I'll be starting graduate school this summer. Been wanting to move to an LCD, but, like everything else, there seems to be almost to many choices.... I had kind of become scared of Viewsonic (or even LG) as it seems I've read about many people having many problems with these types. BUT, this could just be because more people are buying these brands, so obviously there will be more complaints, right??

Well, while I do not think ViewSonic's support or software is good whatsoever, I think they make top-notch monitors in terms of image quality. Samsung makes fairly good image quality monitors and has better support. That's my experience anyhow. Of course there are a couple duds within each manufacturer. I have owned a Samsung 710T LCD and a ViewSonic VP930b and I'm quite pleased with both. If you choose to go with Samsung, I'd recommend the 940b (not 930b,930bf,or 940bf).

Again, thanks xtknight. I might actually be able to see one of these locally, as where I live finding a store with either of the ones I mentioned originally would be hard to do. I would like to eyeball one before I actually order it. The NECs have the shiney screen, and I have been leery of that without seeing it.

The NEC is pretty expensive for a 6-bit panel ($427 after rebate). NECs tend to be overpriced, IMO. I doubt the NEC can justify being $100 more, so I would say the Hyundai is a better deal at $320.

Other good ones of this type:

The BenQ is very attractively priced, and has been a good brand for me both at home and at work. I also have a ViewSonic 19" Widescreen panel, but would not recommend it, too much backlight bleeding.

If you want an 8-bit panel, and don't need the fastest response time, then this one isn't bad:

The 20-ms response time is conservatively rated, so its not so bad for gaming. It has excellent color, viewing angles and contrast, at a decent price. The Viewsonic 930b is also 8-bit.

BenQ FP91V test

The FP91V seems to have a too-aggressive overdrive chip so I wouldn't recommend it. The 930BF has the same problem and is documented elsewhere on both THG and X-Bit Labs. However the 940B, at least as far as I'm aware, doesn't even use overdrive in the first place and won't have any problems. The VP930b is actually a 6 bit+FRC which was one of ViewSonic's great cover-ups, but it is nevertheless a high-contrast type P-MVA panel and better suited to displaying colors than the comparable TNs (the ones bearing the "6 bit" moniker very often). I have seen it with my own eyes and the difference (between 710T and VP930b) is staggering despite both being 6-bit. :)

That 940T looks interesting, but don't be fooled. It is still 6-bit with a 2x2 dither pattern, just like the 970P, and on top of that lacks overdrive (crucial for the PVA panels), so I wouldn't really recommend that either. Well, it's possible you wouldn't see ghosting on it, maybe 40% possible, but check it out first. If you don't see ghosting, great, get it. It's a great high-contrast display otherwise. But the 940B seems the most enticing at this moment if you are unable to see the 940T in person and refuse to get a ViewSonic. If I were you though I'd give the VP930b a try.

The response time for the 940T would probably end up like this Sony MFM-HT95 (consider the VP191 reference LCD very close to VP930 in response). (The lower the latency the better.)

I would get the NEC one just because of that glass coating, even though its specs are otherwise fairly average. You should first take a look at those types of monitors though and see if the reflections bother you.
