What 17 inch LCD display should I pick? I have locked at LG (L1710S and L1710B with DVI), NEC LCD1701, Philips new 170S4FB and Hitchi CML174! Only Hitachi and on of the two LG has DVI but from what I have heard it doesent allways make much different. I want i VERY pricy allround LCD.
The NEC and Hitachi seems to be based on the same hardware but according to tomshardware.com NEC is the better. The Philips interest me alot since it is new BUT it doesnt come with DVI. The LG withot DVI is VERY pricy.
SOOOOOoo! WHAT SHALL I PICK!

Both the NEC and Hitachi are good. I personally have the Hitachi, and think that its great. I think that they only major difference between the two is the brightness. But despite what alot of people say, it doesnt make that much of a difference. My Hitachi is far brighter than any CRT that ive used. You wont be dissapointed with either.

I have seen that the samsung 172-series comes in different flavours? Are the ones without DVI any good? They suite my budget (almost).

Its leaning against the NEC LCD1701 ;-)

Alot of people like the Samsungs, but im not keen on them, they still have a high responce time compared to TFTs like the Hitachi and NEC. And responce time is key for a TFT capable of gaming.

I know the NEC 1760NX model doesn`t come with a DVI lead, however the Hitachi does come with all leads,I think either model will be a good choice.

Update:looks like the 1701 is analogue only,so if you want DVI you will need to go with the 1760NX model.

I just got the Formac Gallery 1740. It's DVI and 17.4 inches with great specs. It's even better than the Mac design lcds. You really can't get much better quality than this.

TCC - Do you know any contacts at Formac? That is a fairly unusual substrate size - perhaps we can get a review lined up?

It's MVA.

They all come in at 17.4" rather than 17".

There are larger one's though.

KristopherKubicki - no, i don't have any contacts there. I just graduated from school this may and since my 21inch crt went out I took some of the grad money and got that 17. All I can say is that I really like it. I do a lot of photoshop/flash and was hesitant with going to LCD and doing design, but I have been completely satisfied. It's like the mac display, but a bit nicer (i think), bigger (17 - 17.4) and works for pc.

the only complaints I found on-line were people thinking the frame of the lcd (not sure the technical term, but the stand...power buttons..etc) just don't seem like they would hold up over time. I haven't had any problems. It looks like an acrylic frame with braces on the legs. Also in reviews they said when they pushed the power/brightness buttons they could see distortion on the lcd screen (i guess that is the main concern of the frame. pushing on the frame caused distortion in the lcd...i guess) however after two months I haven't noticed it. I guess if you jam your thumb in there it might, but you'd have to try. It turns off really really really easy, so you don't have to push at all... and if you have concerns like i did, just put down the extra money and get the 3 year warrenty (they offer one for about 100 less with a 1 year warrenty). The 3 year warrenty also is covered for up to two dead pixels while the 1 is for only 7..

hope that helps...it really is a great monitor. it is a bit pricy, but it's really nice..

now that i look i think you may be talking a review for antech...which would be really cool...and means i didn't need to write this, but ...so it goes :) oh check out their website too, it has all the stats on the monitor you could want.

AnthonyB: Yeah you are right. I am not crazy about MVA compared to other modes (IPS, etc). MVA is mainly used by Taiwanese manufacturers, so I am guessing this LCD has an OEM partner that we can probably get a hold of. (all of those 17.4" panels are made by the same guy).

TCC2F6:

Technical term - bezel

I will see what I can do to get a hold of one of these panels.

I've tried my 172T Samsung with and without DVI, its beautiful in both! And its profile is ultra slim, even comes with a nice bracket if you want to hang it up!

Hi tcc2f6 - i was at there website, looking at the specs of the LCD and it looks great but there is one thing i am confused about, It says that the pixel response time is 10 - 25ms but when you click on more information it says

"Pixel Response

Formac's Gallery displays feature the fastest pixel response time in the industry, making them ideal for intensive full-motion video and game graphics. A fast pixel response eliminates the ghosting and distortion usually seen on LCDs with slower pixel response times. " with a chart showing the response time as 15ms?

Can you explain this to me? If it goes from 10-25ms wouldn't there be some ghosting? But then again they also say its 15ms i am confused he he. Can you tell us if you have seen any ghosting? I am really cosidering this display.

thx alot

Peter-

Not sure how to really test it, but I've played some games and it's done fine. I've also just watched the Futurama DVD on it and no problem with that either. Although not sure what in there would really test it...maybe the 3d part of the intro...

I really havn't had anything bad to say about it (maybe price..heh), but I have it next to a 15inch Samsung 151v and everything is a lot sharper (although this it's not DVI) and it really does have a wider viewing angle.

Like i said, i haven't had any problems with the monitor. Just price, and I will say that I've heard problems of customer support. When I was interested in this monitor i e-mailed them with some questions and they never responded. But after reading a lot on it (a lot on the adobe forums) i decided to get it anyhow (just made sure I got the 3 year warrenty - again, 3 year warrenty covers 2 dead pixels, 1 year is 7). It was backordered when I ordered it. I called them up, they told me that they were getting more in that Thursday, and come that Thursday I got an e-mail telling me it was shipped. so take from that what you will, but that is all i know about it good and bad.

hope that helps...if you have any other questions just ask...maybe there is a better way to test for ghosting...
