I need to get a new DVD since the one that came with the computer can only DAE at 12x and when im trying to burn at 24x the dvd lags behind and gives me a coaster (have 5 now, yay) so I was wondering which DVD I should get (most prefferably at a retail store) Thanks!

Echo the Pioneer 106s. Have two of them. Direct copying is no problem. They will keep up with a 24X burner.

[edit] ugh with that 24x, do you expect any of the dvd drives to really keep up, why dont you extract it to hd, and burn from there, you can do this in the burning software, it will be faster .. [/edit]

Seems like it would be slower... Another thing I was thinking about doing is going out and buying another ATA66 controller, and buying a 56x cd-rom... Or would it just be better to buy a new dvd?

I would just get a new DVD. For retails, I think your only option is the Pioneer, even though the AOpen DVD drive isnt bad all.

The bezel is different, though I know the laser and motor were made by Pioneer. Either way, AOpens arent found in retail stores, so it's not an option anyway.

TDK mentions that their drives are faster to make copies by themselves than most two-drive setups cuz you can rip at 40X and burn back at 24X. Whatever.

If you have a drive with buffer underrun protection, you shouldn't be getting coasters anyway.
