Which 1500 truck to buy and why?

do you work in ND or Alaska?

we do not have too much trouble with our diesels in cold weather as long as we run additive and keep the older trucks plugged in at night. We see -40*F a few times per winter here, and much more frequent in ND.

Live in northern saskatchewan, we see -40*F for fairly long periods (months) of time and none of the diesels seem to stand up here, just looking at all the trade ins after 2-3 years everyone is afraid of diesels that are off warranty.

Of course everyone plugs in there vehicles but that doesn't seem to be enough, most people either have a garage and never shut there diesel off when it's outside it or run propane torches where there vehicles not running to keep it warm.

Thanks for all the advice. Upon hearing you guys advice it was either chevy or ford and I liked the ford better. I never bothered to look at Dodge. If they have that kind of rep I'm sure I'd have to give the truck away when I go to trade it in or sell it. I ended up getting a Ford f150 lariat supercrew. Got a really great price, great trade in value on my Colorado, and very happy with the whole dealership experience which was surprising to me. Sales staff and the sales manager were very friendly and in the end they gave us a very good deal. Black truck with black leather.
I also ended up getting the 5.0 motor. The Ecoboost is a $1750 option and the twin turbo scares me as far as possible high dollar maintenance down the line. The 5.0 gets great mileage and still has plenty of punch. Doesn't hurt hearing that v8 everywhere I go. 🙂

Grats! Was kinda hoping you'd go with the ecoboost just to hear some first hand accounts on it, but I'm sure you'll be happy with what you got.

Couple more pics from my phone. Not 100% sure about the wood grain look. My wife loves it though. Leather is soft and the truck is just as comfortable as any car I've ever been in.
Turin I wanted a Ecoboost but $1750 is a tough pill to swallow. I figured I'd rather have the money that I saved by going with the very comparable 5.0L and getting the higher end lariat over the xlt with an ecoboost.

I didn't bother to read the last couple of pages, but your reference to the "Rep" of the dodge trucks certainly hasn't hurt resale values on them here in Texas. I've personally seen several cases in the past few years where people actually got more than what they paid for a brand new truck on trade-in a few months later. In one particular case a couple of years ago, we had a guy buy a 2009 hemi 2wd tx edition for 27,750 and trade it in for 28,000 3 mos and 5k miles later. Is that typical? No, but it's not unheard of, either, at least with dodge. I never in 8 years of ford and 4 years of chevy/gm time as a salesman/finance/sales mgr/gsm had a single customer trade in a truck for even equal value months later. What's the reason? Because Dodge doesn't sell as many trucks as ford/chevy, there isn't a glut of 3-10k mile trucks floating around to sell as a new car switch unit from a dealership. However, that also works on older models as well. What you should have done is researched each truck then driven them all back to back as I recommended. If that had resulted in your purchasing a ford or chevy then that certainly wouldn't have been a bad decision, but refusing to even consider a truck because a few random dudes on a website trashed it probably isn't the wisest move.

This might come as a surprise to you, but comments on a message board from random non-industry posters don't carry much weight when somebody is deciding what to pay you for a truck.

They kinda do. Its is a 2 peice design and sometimes it blows out and takes the head threads with it, sometimes it just blows out the center part and you can use the special tool to fix, etc...

Its a mess and many places will not do plugs on a 5.4L due to so many needing the heads pulled after one or more break or strip badly.
After you get them out champion is the only one I know that makes a 1 peice plug for that motor. Ford/Autolite make the POS 2 peice plugs.

Funny this thread showed up, my dad's Ford blew out a plug a few days ago. It's the 5.4, although it lasted 240k miles.

Now that I thought about it for a minute, something is bugging me. I swear I remember the ecoboost being a 750 option above the v8, it was $1750 over the v6 but only a +$750 if you were starting from the 5.0.

I just went to to ford site to build and price to confirm my memory, and now it is showing as a 2055 option above the v6 and 1055 more than the v8.

Not that any of that matters, just chasing a hole in my memory.

You might be right about it being a $750 upgrade from the 5.0. The sticker on the truck was already pretty nuts so even another $750 was beyond what I could spend. I'm not sure even if it was a free upgrade I would of done it. The Ecoboost does feel more powerful. Even just cruising around you could feel the torque of the ecoboost. It just worries me being a 6 with a twin turbo. No matter what anyone says that is a really complex motor. How much would someone be willing to pay for a used lariat out of warranty with 80,000 miles on a twin turbo? My guess is not too many people are gonna take the risk.

I also wouldn't be surprised if the price for the Ecoboost went up. All the ford dealerships said they were selling like crazy. When I told them I was looking for a 5.0 they said that surprised them since everyone is looking for the ecoboost.

I don't care, if I were in the market I'd be all over the ecoboost. That motor is insane. And expect the cost of it to go up as gas goes up.

The Ecoboost gets 1mpg better gas mileage over the 5.0. I don't have a huge disposable income so taking a gamble on a 40k pickup truck isn't for me. If all you care about is power and money is not an object get the 6.2L. That thing is a beast. Instantaneous power and loads of it, sounds like a drag car when you punch it, and it's all motor.

I always thought you go all motor over turbo or supercharger whenever possible? Is ford reinventing the wheel with the Ecoboost or is the marketing doing it's job?

Even 1 mpg is almost a 7% improvement. Plus getting peak torque at 2500 is pretty nice. Of course a diesel gives those kind of benefits too, but not everyone wants a Super Duty.

Nice choice. I've been looking at trucks too. Man they are expensive.

Did you finance? What kind of rate did you get if so?

If price is top priority Chevrolet's are usually a couple grand cheaper than a comparable ford. I got 6% and a $1000 rebate for financing through ford. I probably could of got a better rate but they gave me $1000 for financing with ford and 6% is decent. I also didn't haggle the interest rate because I got a great price on the lariat and my trade. It was already late and I didn't want to be haggling down every last nickel til midnight.

What trucks you looking at getting?
