I was taking a quick look at the BJ Penn web site, and noticed the types of things he puts in his morning whey protein shakes.

Anyone else do this? IIRC, he added oatmeal, whey protein, water, banana, berries, and vitamins into his shake.

I love oatmeal, and typically add a scoop of whey protein into the oatmeal, but this method also seems rather curious.

My morning shake:
2 scoops of protein
1 cup of oats
1 cup of frozen berries
16oz water

~600 calories

You really need a blender if you're going to add these things to your shake. Shaker bottles really only work for powders.

I'll have to test something similar to this tomorrow morning, probably before I head to the gym.

I have a blender that seems to be able to blend just about anything, so that's not a major concern.

Here's some good recipes I picked up a while back, don't remember exactly where...... probably Muscle & Fitness.
Protein Du Jour (doc file, ~3kb size)

Like crt1530 said, a blender works well, especially when doing oats (as they take a while to really soak in the moisture, a blender works well to help chop them into drinkable sized chunks!). My Oster brand blender has blender cups available as an option (purchase separately), that allow you to blend everything together in a cup-shaped container, then flip it over, pull off the screw-on bottom (with blender blades and gasket), then pop on a travel lid, so you can take it with you. Nice feature, and definitely a selling point for me when I bought it. :)

marvdmartian, thanks for the linkage! :)

I quickly found out that you really do need to grind the oats down to dust, or you'll likely regret it. :Disgust;

grind the oats? wtf? why can't you just soak them in hot water? i mix mine in one cup of water and nuke them in the microwave for 30 seconds. since i don't like mine warm i just throw in the frozen berries right after i get them out of the microwave.

Shake I made yesterday, 2 servings

1 1/2 C milk
1 C plain yogurt
1/2 green machine naked juice
1 banana
handful of frozen strawberries
1 C oats
4 scoops EAS protein powder (1 serving is 2 scoops)

About 1000 calories. I'm trying to find a good way to bring half of this to work for a 4:00 snack, and drink the other half at about 10:00.

1 banana
1 scoop whey
1/3 cup oats
1/3 cup flaxseed
2 tbs natural PB
1 tbs honey
1 tbs olive oil
2 raw eggs
1.5 cups water

blend and enjoy :)

I tend to leave the honey out of my morning shakes, and leave the olive oil out of my afternoon shakes. Usually only put eggs in the morning one as well.
