where's this AMD price cut?

supposedly we should get a Opty price cut right about now (10/31), normally retailer already started trickling down these prices a week or 2 before it but I haven't heard a thing from any of the major retailors. Is this a good sign? or the holiday season means they will not lower the prices even knows they getting it cheaper from AMD?

Also, what's up with recent X2 hikes? Their prices is making buying AMD almost totally unattractive compare to lower end C2Ds. Even saw some 3800+ X2s in the 180s while E6300 is only 180s.

Socket 939 parts are the ones that are going up in price, that's because they're being phased out and supply is getting tight.

Do you have any AMD price projections to base this expectation on, or is it just speculation?

here's one for Opty:

one more for rest of their chips:

Both should occur around now.

The price cuts were put in place on the 939 Opterons to get rid of them. A lot of retailers may not have any more left anyway, and are not cutting the price. Some may have them still, but won't cut prices since they are still selling at the high price.

In any case, there were indeed price cuts enabled from the top down, it's just up to retailers to put them into place at this point.

I'm waiting for those opty's to come down a bit but now seems they won't do it. So off I go to the C2D land for my next upgrade. Make no sense paying 180 for a dual core AMD when the C2D can be had for the same price and much more performance.

It'd make sense if you wanted to reuse your motherboard, CPU and RAM (if you had a socket 939 mobo). Even with a $40 premium you'd save a lot.

check out the prices with the realtime price search machine. You should get them asap. I got mine from monarchComputer at 160$ with 2$ shipping. I see they raised prices everywhere on the web. The supply for them are running low. Check out newegg. They have opteron 165 in and out of stock every other day. Plus they raise 5 to 10$ every time they restock the opty165. Good luck tracking down those oc monsters before they all gone.

At this time because of the sudden surge to purchase, the suppliers have raised the prices of the dwindling supplies.

In the mad rush to get those Opterons and X2s, the buying public has caused a reversal of fortunes.

I was one of the fortunate ones to get an excellent deal on a X2, but I've noticed that prices have gone up on that CPU too.

Well, your choice if you want the Opteron or X2, you got to pay the price.

IMO, My suggestion now is to go with the C2D with minimum RAM like 1GB and upgrade later.

Some manufacturer's RAM are showing some relief with instant rebates, but I still suggest waiting.

Good luck.

yes, it may be the Xmas seasonal effect. But still, at that price it's bound to tip the hand toward C2D considering C2Ds are capable of clocked at 3+ and that's about a 3.5/6+ AMD speed. In any case I'd wait a bit for the RAM to come down and go for a C2D. Only 6-9 months ago it would have been no problem getting X2/Optys even at a higher price but now with C2Ds, there's competition and more choices for me.

pkme2, I do agree with your assessment, get 1GB C2D setup will be quite optimal and I calculated only about 60 bucks more than X2/Opty at this point. I can swallow that considering the extra speed I'll be enjoying. Sell my current RAM and dish out like 20/30 extra for DDR2 and rest are pretty identical between the two platforms. At least for me since I got no 939 legacy stuff other than the DDR400 RAM. But as you said I'm waiting for the RAM to come down a bit more. Probably 1st Q of 2007 will do it.
